A few days after reviewing a draft of my thesis, my advisor, Dr. Marilyn Rose, passed away—just months after losing her beloved husband, Barry. At her funeral, I found out that Marilyn had spent her remaining days in a hospital bed editing my thesis on her laptop. Fighting chronic pain and illness, Marilyn prefaced her feedback with an apology for her delayed response. She had made a commitment to a student, her family explained, and she needed to honor it. I am forever grateful for my professor’s courage, grace, and selflessness. I just wish that I could thank her.
