Goat Push Ups
—-
In a world of quick fixes there is always a new training system just around the corner. The average guy would be better placed picking a handful of body weight exercises and simply focusing on those for the next six months, rather than jumping from one training system to the next. Our bodies are designed to move. In the simplest of terms, we run, push, pull, squat, lunge, twist and bend. Pretty much everything you do will be a combination of these simple patterns. So before you go asking Santa for the latest training gizmo, ask yourself: Can I do thirty push ups, sixty body-weight squats and ten dead hang pull ups?
We call that trio the Everyman Challenge and I devised it as the initial 100 Rep Challenge. And whilst it’s not cool or sexy, it’s the kind of out of the box strength you should have to manage every day tasks. To be honest, if you can’t do that as a minimum then you need to cancel your gym membership, put your kettlebells on Ebay and get back to basics.
I’ll be back with a complete intro to bodyweight training that you can do without any equipment or gym membership required. It’ll help you scale to your own level of fitness. This is Every Day Activity, the kind of health and fitness you can use, year-round.
Check out some 100 Rep Challenges we setup for Mens Health some time ago.
If all else fails you can always get yourself a goat…
Genius. Can’t imagine how I missed this agriculturally-inspirational stuff but it’s top of my list for next year.
I’ll post on this thread when the first part goes up. And yes, will have some info in time for 2014!
yeah let me know, thanks.
So, I’m keenly interested in the complete intro to bodyweight training you promise. I need to scale to my level of fitness, get into an every-day activity I can do year-round, rebuild my core strength, and work up to your Everyman Challenge. Is there any way I can get a notification when that’s out? And, will it be out in time for me to start off 2014 with it?
Gotta love the goats. I agree that once you start body weight training you have to find ways to ramp it up. That is the reason we came up with the basic challenge. Most folk will take a little time to get those numbers in. The other thing to consider here is I place emphasis on Every Day Activity, the kind of thing we used to do as a matter of course. So getting in a basic body weight session should be a daily habit rather than an alternative to any specific routine you might have. Research is in, if… Read more »
Hi Rannoch
Wonderful video of a goat loving man, ( and man loving goats). 🙂
The (only) trouble with bodyweight exercises is that after a prolonged period they can get just boring and for me that is the biggest killer of any regimen. Kettlebells allow me the opportunity to change it up a bit as does a heavy bag and soon some portable gym rings. As Dan John says ‘do something’.
