Currently, I’m reading Just Start: Take Action, Embrace Uncertainty, Create the Future by authors Leonard A. Schlesinger, Charles F. Kiefer, and Paul B. Brown.
In the book, the authors talk about a concept called Creaction. Creaction is a word they created by combining creating and action. Creaction involves replacing thinking and analysis with evidence created from acting your way through the goals you set.
I have spent a lot of time thinking about learning front-end website design. And, while thinking is necessary for creating, without action, nothing has been created. At least until now.
I decided to put the author’s concept of Creaction into play. The process has three parts to it — 1. Desire, 2. Take a smart step as quickly as you can, and 3. Build.
Basically you start with step one and repeat all three steps over and over again until either you’ve achieved the goal(s) or decided the goal(s) aren’t something you wanted anymore.
Below I want to share with you the beginning of my process.

Desire: I want to become a web professional and start a business related to that goal. That means I must learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, CMS, and read up on starting a business. I already know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, so that just leaves PHP and CMS.
Taking a smart step as quickly as you can is a three-step process.
(1) First, the authors state you must act quickly with the means at hands. (I know a free app I can download that will teach me PHP for free).
(2) The second part of taking a quick smart step includes staying within my acceptable loss. In other words, the cost of my smart step shouldn’t be more than I’m willing to lose. (By using a free app I have already met this step).
(3) The last part of step two involves bringing others along. Bringing others along will help confirm the quality of my goal. (I met this goal by joining a web professionals group). Having others who share my goal not only proves the quality of my goal, it also adds to my confidence knowing others support me.
When the author’s say Build they mean take what you’ve learned from taking a smart step and grow from there. With every step you take, reality should change. Put another way; I should have learned something from taking my smart step.
What I learned was that I should be able to learn what I need to know, however, there are slight changes that I need to make in my personal life to ensure success.

After joining the web professionals group, I posted a question asking what I needed to know about becoming a web professional and what I should be doing now to become one who starts his own business one day.
In addition to explaining how I needed to learn JQuery in addition to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and CMS, users provided essential advice on how I could stay committed to my goal. Their input advice was as follows:
- Part of achieving the goals you set involves becoming more organized. Download Google Calendar and put everything you need to do into the calendar.
- Motivation: On the days when I need a kick in the ass because I don’t feel like working towards my goal, read something motivational to help influence me to keep working towards my goals.
- If I want to start my own business one day, I should start reading business tips today and learn how to start your own business.
