This may come as no revelation to many of you, but to some, if I say you should take the time to take care of yourself —take time out because you deserve a break—you would look at me as if I had grown two heads. But you shouldn’t be surprised. Yes, this world today is fast-paced, full of opportunities and aha! moments that you feel you must take advantage of right away. Slowing down is practically unheard of. Relax is not in your vocabulary. Yet, to be at the best for yourself and for others, slowing down occasionally should be a regular part of your lifestyle. It will improve the quality of your life. And there is a good chance that it will increase your lifespan.
If you are not sure of what to do or just how to unwind, here are a few suggestions:
1. Meditate or pray regularly. Disconnect from the earthly and connect with the spiritual.
2. If you normally cut your own hair or shave your face, go to the barber. Get the works.
3. Go fishing.
4. Take a slow, leisurely walk in nature. Pay attention to the sounds and the sights.
5. Visit a museum or an art gallery.
6. Read a book for the enjoyment of reading the book.
7. Disconnect from technology including the tv.
8. Take an art class or a writing class or a class on wine, etc, just make sure it’s fun for you. I have taken up photography and yes, the camera bug has infected me.
9. Schedule regular trips so that you periodically get a different point of view, literally.
These are just a few suggestions. I’m sure you can think of others.
I’m reminded of what they say when you are flying: Put the oxygen mask on yourself first, then and only then, should you try to help others.
Take care of yourself, then take care of your business, your job, and others. Unwind occasionally, meditate regularly. It’s good for your health. When you don’t, your body has a way of doing it for you. You may find yourself susceptible to illnesses or even accidents that will interrupt your routine. So, put a dash in it – take time out periodically.
Not sure of how or why you should unwind and take time out for yourself. I can help you learn how to take care of yourself first.
