Although you can’t control the outcome of everything, you can control the effort you put into becoming the best version of yourself every day through these habits.
Here are 7 habits to adopt this new year to enhance efficiency, build a stronger mindset, and achieve success in both your personal and professional life.
1/ Engage in deep work
Learn to command your brain to understand when to block out everything and give your full attention to the task at hand. Make it at a specified time and space. If you think multitasking makes you productive, you’re wrong — it just makes you busy. In the process, it slows you down since you’re giving a piece of your brain to multiple things at once, not allowing for full focus and efficiency. So know the difference between being productive and busy. There should always be a target goal to reach for the day to stay focused on the priorities and know when to move on to other things.
Work smarter, not harder. Learn to control your urge to distract yourself with something else when you’re having a hard time. This is your peak point. This is when you should be pushing your capabilities to the limit because that’s when results show — when you struggle with something but push through to solve it. Through persistence and firm belief, they know they can finish what they need to get done when there is an allocated time and space to get into the flow.
2/ Optimize your time
Be more aware of and value your time. What does this look like in practice? Set your boundaries and know when to say no. Free time doesn’t mean sitting in bed and scrolling on social media. It means doing something that will make you feel good and refreshed to come back stronger. Don’t you feel more sluggish after staring at a screen for so long? Everything should be done with a potential benefit in mind. It should never be just for the sake of passing time. Seize every opportunity to better yourself through something educational, creative, relaxing, or fun — these are beneficial to your overall well-being.
3/ Have a diagnostic view
Look for the root causes of problems, and examine and analyze potential reasons and solutions. Like a doctor diagnosing what the problem is, you should look at things diagnostically. Don’t act or react with emotion first. Hold yourself down and pay attention to the current situation at hand through a diagnostic lens. Then you’ll understand how to react and what steps you need to take to move forward.
“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” — Epictetus
4/ Make an effort to be resourceful
Being resourceful is being adaptable, creative, and using what you have at your disposal to overcome challenges. Don’t focus on what you don’t have. Use what you already have in hand — every possible resource and ability — to succeed at the task at hand. You can even turn problems into opportunities and ideas. Have a solution-oriented and resourceful mindset.
5/ Maintain a high-value network
Create but maintain a valuable network. That means keeping in touch and reaching out to your connections engaging in meaningful interactions, sharing your work, and messaging a simple “congratulations” to your co-worker. But it’s not just about showing up and making sure you’re seen. Provide value. Part of being resourceful is also being willing to share your knowledge and resources — offering to help others and following up with them on their progress. You never know when you’re going to need that same support.
6/ Practice self-care
No matter what, you need to prioritize your mental and physical health and this can be done in forms of self-care. This includes a healthy diet, exercise, adequate sleep, blocking time out for a hobby, etc. If you want to be at your best, you need to feel your best. For optimum performance and overall well-being, self-care is essential. If you leave your health behind, those problems will accumulate and catch up to you, leading to more potentially serious issues and affecting your progress.
7/ Read quality books
Information can be found and accessed easily all over the internet, but books are still the main source of knowledge. Successful people never stop learning. Take a look at the lists of books the top writers and other entrepreneurs read and recommend. If you’re not continuously learning, how can you evolve and grow your mind? How can you come up with new ideas and innovations to expand and grow personally and professionally? Always seek knowledge and learn especially from those you aspire to be.
These habits lay the foundation for implementing real change through actionable steps and mindset shifts. Be intentional with what you do and always strive for excellence.
