There is a dangerous misunderstanding in modern dating. We chase “The Spark.” We look for that sudden, electrifying jolt of anxiety, the sleepless nights, the constant checking of the phone, the thrill of the chase.
When we feel this intense mix of hope and terror, we tell ourselves: “This must be love.”
But psychology tells us a different, harder truth: That spark is often not chemistry; it is your attachment system sounding an alarm.
If you have an Anxious Attachment style, you are subconsciously drawn to Avoidant partners. Why? Because their distance feels familiar. You are used to fighting for love, so a partner who gives it freely feels “boring” or “suspicious.” You mistake the anxiety of abandonment for the passion of romance.
The Trap of the Rollercoaster
The Anxious-Avoidant trap is the most common and painful dance in love.
- The Chaser (Anxious): “If I just love them hard enough, they will stay.”
- The Runner (Avoidant): “If I get too close, I will lose my freedom.”
This dynamic creates a powerful, addictive cycle of highs and lows. The lows (silence, distance) shatter you, so the highs (reconnection, crumbs of affection) feel euphoric. You become addicted to the relief of them coming back, rather than the joy of them staying.
We romanticize this struggle. We call it “fighting for love.” In reality, it is just two wounded children acting out their fears.
True compatibility is not about how hard you fight for each other; it is about how much peace you bring to each other.
“Ishq wo nahi jo tumhe be-chain rakhe, Ishq wo hai jo tumhare dil ko sukoon de.” (Love is not that which keeps you restless, Love is that which brings peace to your heart.)
Boring is Beautiful (The Secure Love)
When you finally meet a Secure partner someone who is consistent, reliable, and open it might feel wrong at first. It feels… quiet. There is no chase. There is no guessing game. They text back. They say what they mean.
Your nervous system, addicted to the chaos, might scream: “There’s no spark here!”
Do not run away.
This “boredom” is actually safety. It is the silence of a heart that is no longer constantly scanning for danger. It is the foundation upon which real life can be built.
Healthy love is not a rollercoaster; it is a calm sea. It doesn’t make for a dramatic movie, but it makes for a magnificent life.
Rewriting Your Definition of Attraction
To find true love, you must betray your own bad habits. You must stop trusting the “spark” that comes from insecurity and start valuing the “glow” that comes from safety.
- Stop choosing the person who leaves you wondering.
- Choose the person who leaves you sure.
The goal is not to find someone who triggers your wounds, but someone who helps you heal them.
“Jo tumhari khamoshi ko na samjhe, Wo tumhare alfazon ka haqdaar nahi.” (He who cannot understand your silence, Is not worthy of your words.)
The Courage to Heal
Changing your attachment style is the hardest work you will ever do. It requires you to sit in the discomfort of being treated well and not run away from it.
It requires you to look at the “boring” person the one who is kind, steady, and available and realize that this is what you have been starving for all along.
Your soulmate is not the person who makes you feel like you are on the edge of a cliff; your soulmate is the person who makes you feel like you are finally on solid ground.
