UPDATE: Regretfully, the death toll rose to 53 lives lost in San Antonio, Texas after this article was published.
The United States and the world have been gripped by the most horrific incident of migrant smuggling recorded in modern national history.
The somber scene was discovered on June 27, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas. Faint cries for help were heard inside an abandoned tractor-trailer located on an isolated road outside of the city limits. Once opened, hot bodies were discovered piled in sweltering conditions inside the truck. Neither water, proper ventilation, nor air-conditioning was found in it.
A total of 51 migrants died making their reclusive and unlawful entry into the United States. While men and women are documented among the dead, some of the deceased could also be teenagers. Several others including children were discovered clinging to life and continue to be medically treated for heat exhaustion-related health problems.
It has been determined that the nationals originated from Mexico as well as Central American countries including Guatemala and Honduras. Investigations are ongoing. Details of this story can be found here.
This incident reflects the desperation of the countless members of humanity who try to enter the border of the United States either legally or illegally. The passionate desire of nationals like those who lost their lives seeking promise in this land remains unending.
Many Americans fail to understand their desperation, anguish, and relentless determination. But the words found in the haikus that follow give insight into their hopes and dreams.
These verses are dedicated to the 51 who perished searching for a better way in life as well as all migrants who strive for actualized hope.
We Mourn for the 51
Looking for freedom,
stacked, hot, you tried to escape
but died in bondage.
Our Dream
Opportunity.
The desire to be free.
It’s desperation.
The Passage
We risk detection.
We want to remain obscure.
We yearn to live here.
The Ultimate Hope
Peace is what we want.
Peace in our heart, mind, and soul.
Living peacefully.
Life Is Unfair
Cruelty chases us.
Fear and poverty clothe us.
We remain hopeless.
We Want It
School, work, hope, freedom,
confidence, and achievement.
It’s empowerment.
Perseverance
A light shines brightly
that leads to a better life.
We follow the path.
For Our Children
It’s our legacy.
Believers not just dreamers,
success for our heirs.
We Belong
A place to call home
is right here in this nation.
It’s our destiny.
