Is it too much to ask to have a dad?
That’s the only thing I’ve wanted my whole life.
I wouldn’t mind if we weren’t a family
As long as I’d have him with me I’d be satisfied.
A dad who would be close by
A dad I could see while talking
A dad who could hug me
A dad to wipe my tears
A dad who could give me advice
That’s all I ask for
To have my daddy back.
But I guess it’s too much to ask.
I guess everything comes with a price.
Apparently, it was free to have him taken away!
It was free to have him behind bars!
It was free to destroy my childhood!
It was free to destroy a family!
To make me go through pain was free!
Yup, all of that was free!
And I’m not speaking just for me
I’m speaking for everyone who has gone through the same thing I have
Because it’s an everyday thing
Every day one of us loses a dad or mom
It’s an everyday thing
That we with our bare eyes see them being taken away
An everyday thing that we miss them
An everyday thing having to put on a mask
A fake smile and pretend everything is all right
It’s an everyday thing to hide our pain
It’s us paying the price.

POPS is a high school club that welcomes all those whose lives have been touched by prison. We offer a space where members are encouraged to write, talk and paint their truths. At POPS we thrive on seeing the world as it is while imagining it as it could be. We are creating hope by tackling shame and fear. We are building a community based on dignity and openness.
