Do you still remember the last time you felt that incredible spark inside you when you were with someone?
Most of us probably have experienced that high-in-love feeling at least once in a lifetime.
A relationship can bring you a lot of feelings. Quoting The Goo Goo Dolls in a song called “Iris” which says,
“When life feels like a movie, you’ll bleed just to know you’re alive”.
That of course if you’re with the right person.
However, too many people settle down for less because they think it’s the right one. But it’s not.
I’ve been in several relationships in the past where there were more bad feelings than good ones. I thought it was normal.
How could we expect a relationship will be forever perfect? But we should know the difference.
The wrong relationship will make you feel like you live in a cage and helpless, the right one?
It’ll give you these feelings most of the time:
…
1. You feel appreciated even if your actions seem insignificant
Many couples fail to build a long-term relationship because they neglect the small things that actually matter the most: showing appreciation to each other every day.
Last Summer when my boyfriend and I reunited and lived in the same place, I noticed how much difference it made to our relationship just by saying we’re grateful to have each other as often as we could.
It has become our special ritual now — even on the days when we didn’t get along.
When your partner does something for you, it’s important to acknowledge it. It sounds small but it can bring a greater impact if done over and over again.
You don’t need to wait until it’s Valentine’s Day to show how appreciative you’re of your partner. You can do it right now.
2. You feel cared for and loved
This sounds obvious but it’s not always the case, especially in a long-term relationship. Couples start taking their partner for granted.
However, if you’re in the right relationship, you’ll feel cared for and loved most time. I say most times because it’s impossible to be happy 24/7.
Every relationship has its lows but even if you’re going through some hard phases, the right person will still make you feel like you aren’t alone.
You aren’t going against each other, instead, you do your best to support each other under all conditions.
3. You feel better at communicating your needs
This is what I learned throughout my long-term relationship.
As repetitive and cheesy as this sounds, communication is indeed a key to a successful relationship. There’s no other way around it.
If you suck at expressing your feelings, being with the wrong person will only make it worse.
Not only you become this person who’s afraid to be judged by saying what you want to say, but you also will build resentment towards your partner — without you realizing it or not.
That’s why the easiest way to know if this relationship you’re in is the right one or not is by seeing how you really feel when it comes to your own needs.
Do you feel free to let your partner know? Or do you hold back a lot to protect your partner’s feelings?
Because the so-called “the one” will make sure you feel safe. After all, your partner should be the one who got your back right?
4. You feel more independent than you’ve ever been before
Some people think being in a relationship will take away their freedom. It’s funny because for so long, I used to think the same way.
It changed once I met my current boyfriend. Being in this relationship with him has made me feel more independent and brave and powerful.
He supports me in every decision I made especially in my career life and it makes me more excited to work on my goals every day.
Nothing beats that feeling of having someone who believes in you like no one else.
It’ll give you the confidence boost you didn’t know you needed.
5. You won’t feel scared to let out your thoughts and opinions
When I was in the wrong relationship with some dude who didn’t even care, I questioned it a lot.
My mind was full of any way that I could do to fix the relationship. I was so caught up in trying to convince myself that this is it, I love this guy.
But I didn’t.
Deep down I knew something wasn’t right. And I couldn’t stop but think, “is there anyone better out there who can love me better than him?”
Look, I’m not saying you can never have doubts in your relationship. It’ll show up even in healthy relationships but it’s not every day.
You don’t wake up thinking if you truly love this person. You don’t feel FOMO (fear of missing out). And you don’t keep the doubtful feelings alone.
The right relationship will hide nothing. Sure, white lies happen once in a while but for the most part, your partner will know everything.
When I have bad days or one thought that keeps coming back, I always go to my boyfriend and see what’s his opinion on it.
Even if it’s about me having doubts about our relationship. You should be free to let your partner know what’s on your mind.
…
Overall, the right relationship will make you thrive in life. It makes a living more meaningful because you share your happiness with each other.
It’s not gonna be sunshine every day. Sometimes you’ll have a fight 3 days in a row. There are moments when it’s plain boring with no sparks whatsoever.
But again, when you’re with the right person, you’ll still feel like you’re the luckiest person alive just to be with your partner.
The right relationship doesn’t come so often. So if you have one, make sure you hold tight to it.
