As winter settles into the Northern Hemisphere, millions of travelers are chasing sunlight, not just warmth. With long days and late sunsets, the Southern Hemisphere is quietly winning the early year travel conversation. To help sun seekers make the most of January and February, Saily has compiled a list of cities where the sun currently shines the longest.
“Travelers are becoming more strategic with daylight. It’s not only about escaping the cold, it’s about maximizing the hours you get outside. More sun means more experiences – and that’s shaping when and where people choose to go,” says Matas Cenys, head of product at Saily.
Southern Hemisphere takes the lead
Right now, cities such as Santiago (sunset 20:53), Melbourne (20:41), Buenos Aires (20:06), Sydney (20:06), and Cape Town (19:58) are experiencing peak daylight – offering up to three extra hours of sun compared to major US and European cities.
In Santiago, the sun rises at 6:54 and sets at 20:53, making it a standout for travelers who want to squeeze in everything from morning hikes to golden hour dinners without racing the clock. Buenos Aires, with sunrise at 6:03 and sunset at 20:06, offers a similar rhythm, ideal for late brunches and even later culture.
Coastal lifestyle capitals stay bright
Cape Town continues its seasonal glow with a 5:57–19:58 window which is nearly 14 hours of daylight, perfect for wine country day trips, beach afternoons, and scenic sunsets along the Atlantic coast.
Meanwhile in Australia, Perth (5:32–19:24) and Melbourne (6:22–20:41) are in full summer mode, proving why January and February have become popular months for European and American travelers heading south.
The US West Coast shows a brighter side of winter
Even outside the Southern Hemisphere, sunlight trends vary dramatically. While East Coast US cities are deep into short-day winter, the West Coast paints a different picture:
- San Diego (6:49–17:11)
- Los Angeles (7:00–17:12)
- San Francisco (7:21–17:21)
Though not summer bright, longer afternoons and mild temperatures still make California a winter escape option.
Tropical and near Equator cities hold steady
Cities near the equator maintain near-constant daylight year-round. Rio de Janeiro (5:25–18:43), Honolulu (7:11–18:14), Lima (5:58–18:40), Guayaquil (6:24–18:37), and Quito (6:21–18:29) all offer consistent daytime hours – ideal for travelers prioritising stability and warm weather over maximal daylight.
Europe and North Africa become “Bright alternatives”
Closer to Europe, Casablanca (8:32–18:50) and Marrakech (8:30–18:56) offer valuable late afternoon sunshine compared to the continent itself, making North Africa one of the most accessible winter sun patches from major European airports.
Even the Atlantic islands show promise:
- Funchal, Madeira (8:07–18:30)
- Las Palmas, Gran Canaria (7:53–18:33)
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife (7:57–18:35)
For short-haul winter trips, these remain Europe’s most reliable sunshine options.
With northern winter in full swing and southern summer at its peak, the window from late January through early March is prime time for travelers looking to stretch their days – whether that means South America’s late sunsets, Australia’s long afternoons, or the Atlantic islands’ steady winter glow.
