Shaping children into adults isn’t easy. It takes a loving heart, a clear head, a steady hand, and endless patience. And an arsenal of quotes.

Editor’s Note: As parents, we do our best to impart good values and raise our kids to be decent, respectful, responsible citizens of the world. That means letting them know they’re loved while also keeping them in line and preparing them for an independent future. In this week’s Mother’s Day entry for “The Visual Conversation,” our graphic artist-in-residence and mother herself Judy Clement Wall reminds us of some the correctives we may have heard growing up—and may catch ourselves—whether we are mothers or fathers—using with our own children. The one quote she didn’t include, because it’s always implicit in all the others, is “Honey, I love you.” We love you, too, mom, and Happy Mother’s Day! As always, we encourage readers to build on “The Visual Conversation” and create an actual conversation in the comments.
