There’s one simple, weird thing I do that keeps me hyper-focused throughout the day. All day, every day.
It has the powerful psychological effect of keeping me dialed in and helps me to expand each and every moment, getting more done in 16 hours than most people do in two weeks. So what is it?
It…
Has to do with keeping track of precisely how many minutes I have left in the day.
See, in a 16-hour day, assuming you’re getting 8 hours of sleep? As in, assuming that, without 8 hours of sleep you’ve basically got the focus and motivation of a 2-year-old with candy in your veins?
You’ve got just 960 minutes. That’s it. That’s all you’ve got. Your total allotment of minutes for the day.
I keep this ever-dwindling number at the top of my Notes app on my iPhone, which I use constantly to keep track of my priority for the day (“priority” should never be pluralized, by the way — PRIORITY means ONE!).
Every hour on the hour, I update the number, meaning I subtract “60” from what I’ve got written down.
960 900 840 780 720
(Jeez, I hope my math is right. That would be embarrassing haha)
The URGENCY that this inspires is truly remarkable, and I’ve found that keeping track of this one simple thing helps me ramp up my determination never to waste a single one of those minutes.
It’s literally that easy. And that difficult. The outer world will always pull you away from your center of awareness, your realization that the minutes in your day (and in your life) are finite, constantly slipping away, never to return.
Maintaining awareness of this fact is the first step towards doing something about it, using this knowledge to help you win the day. Every day.
It’s a simple, straightforward, powerful practice that I use myself each and every day, and I sincerely hope you benefit from testing it out.
All the best,
Matt Karamazov
