Every Tuesday evening our #StopRacism group looks at racism through news and world events. This LIVE call with The Good Men Project community has been happening for years and is life-changing for the participants. This is the recording of the call from Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
Some topics we covered were:
- Host Ashok Selvam started talking about the Olympics, the allyship for marginalized people in the protests, as well as the pushback against it and the way comedy is often used as a vehicle to be racist.
- Our community joined in and discussed using the words “he was a product of his times” to excuse racist behavior.
- How slavery was never shown to be as horrific as it was.
- Giving racist behavior the appropriate cultural context so we are not ignoring it nor excusing it.
- Critical Race Theory and its intentions.
- The ways in which history is taught incorrectly.
- Ways we can make our systems more equitable.
- Reparations and how they could go far in eliminating racism — and why some people find that word triggering (Hint: They don’t really want the world to be more equitable, or they see reparations as black people “getting something for free” when that is not the point at all.)
- Racism = bigotry + power (and why it is important to understand that equation.)
- Part of the problem is that poor white people don’t believe they have power.
- Generational wealth transformed the lives of white people.
We tackle the difficult topics because we want to figure out a way to create a more inclusive culture and a better world for everyone.
We’d love to have you join us for the next one. Talk to you soon!
