Being a brother means a lot of things, it just doesn’t always mean sharing blood.
—
Being brotherly is not just bond by blood
Being brotherly is being there in the mud.
Being brotherly is ‘Bro. I gotcha back’
Being brotherly is being real, no act.
Am I my brother’s keeper, it’s no need to wonder
I’m there for you bro, sunshine, snow or thunder.
My brother’s got another mother and another dad
Another last name, different than the one I had.
I also got a brother who I share blood with
Who I grew up with. Who I got love with.
I got another brother older than my dad
I call him Big Brother Uncle even though he’s named Chad.
Being brotherly is more than being the bank
When you out doing dumb stuff. Seeing the tank.
Bro, pick up the phone. I need bail money
In retrospect, the whole thing was real funny.
My brother came through, put down half a stack
My brothers on the block. Man, where they all at.
That’s when I learned. That’s when I got burned.
That’s when I knew what brotherly meant in real terms.
Never been out in Philly, but my city got love
And let me say this here, brother ain’t no thug.
Brother is another man, sometimes with another plan
He’s the bagel to ya breakfast. The sun to ya tan.
He listens when I talk, picks me up when I walk
Keeps me out of them times when lines drawn in chalk.
Always keeps it real. Always the raw deal
Always a superhero without the blue steel.
Without wearing the cape. He’s in a business suit.
We go out and double date, the girls think he’s too cute.
That’s another thing a brother does, hangs with ya
Whether out at karaoke and he sangs with ya.
Maybe out at the gym playing three on three
Let’s give these cats a chance. Put ‘d’ on me.
This is basketball, homey, another way to bond
Sports gets men involved with what’s going on.
Brotherly love is loyalty. Kingly and royalty
Crown pon top, before they exploited me.
Brother from another tribe, others have died
So I’ll never forget my brother’s suicide.
I got the blood of a king no matter what his name
Jesus Christ, Allah, Buddha, all the same.
They was all my brother. Yeah we share the same mother
Mother Africa. Never forget it, my brother.

thank u. DJ. really apreciate this!
I’m really enjoying reading your writing, guy.
Continue on. You words, the depth of that mentor you’ve mentioned have meaning.
Just the transformation from who you were to who you are will be inspirational to the men that need to hear those words. For me it is interesting to see that you’ve gone from where you were, to becoming that very man you spoke off, evidenced by those very words you now speak, that very teaching that you now engage in.
Well done.
