When you’re seeing a new therapist, it’s essential to have standards. You want to make sure that your therapist is educated, and preferably has a higher level of education, like a PsyD or a Ph.D. We all know that education is important for a mental health professional. You also want to make sure that you click with that person and that they “get” you because one of the things you’re thinking about in your list of therapist requirements is that you can talk to this person. What do you look for in a therapist?
When you’re looking for a therapist, the first thing you’ll notice is their picture online if you’re looking at their profiles online on psychologytoday.com or similar websites, and you’ll see if you get a vibe from them. Do they look like someone that you can speak about your problems to candidly? If you feel that, then reach out to them. One of the most important things to look for in a therapist is a connection. You want someone that you feel comfortable with, and it’s important that a therapist has that vibe. A picture can tell you a lot about a person. Check out their profile and make sure that they have experience in the topic that you’re looking to work on, like eating disorders, depression, or anxiety. A therapist needs to be able to treat you for whatever it is that you’re looking for treatment for so that you can get well.
As mentioned previously, a therapist should have a Master’s or Doctorates level education in psychology so that they’re able to treat you for these issues. They need to have studied human behavior. Checking to see that they have an appropriate education can tell you how much they know about working with people. In addition, do they have a clinical background? You want to make sure that they do. For example, if you have an eating disorder, maybe they’ve worked in a residential treatment facility with clients that have eating disorders. What is their background? You want to make sure what kind of education they have concerning psychology, but also, in specialty areas. Another therapy requirement would be that they’re a good listener, but also that they get good feedback.
Hearing from your therapist is important during a session. You don’t want to meet with a therapist who simply listens and doesn’t provide any adequate feedback because that’s not fulfilling. It’s a balance; does your therapist listen, and do they provide feedback? Make sure that you get a balance of both. Maybe, you’re somebody that needs homework. If it’s a behavioral therapy environment, your therapist can provide you with exercises to practice from home. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is an excellent type of mental health treatment where you can learn to cope with anxiety and depression by learning how to identify negative thoughts, write them down, and process them through thought records. Having homework is essential to the process. You need to be able to implement CBT techniques in your daily life.
