High school senior Drake Wilson recently came out to his parents after watching HBO’s adaptation of The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer’s iconic play about the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. He even posted an adorable YouTube video of him coming out.
They felt it was important to share their son’s announcement in a city that has not taken a stand for LGBT rights.

So what did his parents do after their son announced he was gay? They celebrated with their son on taking this major step toward his true identity by posting a celebration announcement in a newspaper.
However, this wasn’t just any newspaper! The Wilson’s posted a celebratory ad in theHouston Chronicle’s Celebration section in response to the defeat of HERO, an equal rights ordinance that would have covered sexual orientation and gender identity from discrimination. Even though the Wilson’s live in Washington, they felt it was important to share their son’s announcement in a city that has not taken a stand for LGBT rights.
“I couldn’t think of a better place than Houston, out of the entire country, where they needed to hear my message of pride,” Joan Wilson, Drake’s mother, said. “My announcement was my way of humanizing the issue.”
