What’s your fave
one hit wonder?
It’s a term usually used with a certain amount of disdain–indicating an artist who managed to mine stardust once, but was never quite able to do it again. I’ve never understood this, since most of us will never have one hit in our lives, so it seems a bit sour-grapey to make fun of those folks who actually managed to pull it off–even if it was more by fluke than anything else. Because of this I tend to have genuine reverence for these figures who managed to make us happy for a brief period, which is a gift not to be taken at all lightly.
Here are my personal faves*:
Okay, that’s enough from me. Your turn!
*This list is admittedly very North American centric and may feature performers who had much longer careers around the world than they did here.
“Safety Dance” of course….

great remembrance, i always loved the new romantics for their male dress sense (very catchy to this male crossdresser).
unrelated, but on the youtube page, it had a link to a wang chung song, i went straight over to ‘everybody have fun tonight’ – and im a wang chunging , doing a bangles’ walk like an egyptian’ dance
🙂
Shakespears Sister “Stay”, was a stonking great tune. ethereal and moody
C’Mon….it *has* to be “In a Big Country” by Big Country. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1032u_big-country-in-a-big-country_music
I’m not familiar with all of them, but I’m sure that some like Quarterflash would not qualify as a one hit wonder. “Love Has Got a Line on You” reached number 14, which may not be a top ten, but if Casey Kasem played it (Top 40), I’m thinking it’s probably a hit.
The one I’m thinking about may not qualify though either, “Waiting for a Star to Fall” by Boy Meets Girl. They wrote three number one’s, but only performed one. It’s one of my top ten all time favorite songs so I thought I’d bring it up.
Sorry, Quarterflash’s “Take Me to Heart” reached number 14. There were a bunch of Scandal songs I liked too, but not sure if they’d qualify as hits.
“Waiting for a Star to Fall” by Boy Meets Girl.
watta a tune, love it. late 80s elegance, sheen, optimism, and souuuuul.
and when the jazz saxophone enters, for its solo – heaven
(there were a couple of good songs from that yuppie soul/yuppie pop era, like wilson philips – ‘hold on’. that panoramic sweep around the mountain in the vid, was so bliss)
How about “Driver’s Seat” by Sniff & The Tears, or “Sausalito Summer Night” by Deisel? check out their site at http://www.deazol.com.
