Do you sometimes dim your light just to fit in? Do you find yourself over-giving? Do you over-sacrifice for things (or people) that you deem sacred?
Sometimes the reasons seem valid.
New love. Responsibilities. Fear of abandonment and loneliness.
This subtly forces you to behave and act in a manner you don’t want to. Sometimes you ignore your feeble voice to fit in and be accepted by people who don’t appreciate you.
Now, imagine if you take back your power.
What if you stopped giving your energy to people who don’t value you, withdrew from places where you are not prioritized, and retreated instead of asking for endless explanations?
What would happen?
The answer is hidden in a profound spiritual and psychological truth:
When you stop caring what others think of you, when you withdraw your precious energy from people/activities which suck your life out — you enter into your power — Power of self-acceptance.
Society is built on fear.
It instills the fear of being an outcast. Sometimes your close ones subtly use this manipulation to control your behavior. You are trained to live within the lines set by others.
The moment you pull back, it disbalances their lives. You become the chaotic key and a rebel that nobody likes.
But it fills you with courage to be the person you want to be, irrespective of what others think or do.
You truly become free of their (and your) psychological prison.
Freedom vs bondage.
From childhood, we are conditioned to believe that being appreciated by others is a massive reward in life. We are taught how others determine our worth.
But this slowly undermines your shine.
When you value others more than you value yourself, you give them the power to make you happy or sad.
They control your reactions and emotions. People press your buttons to gain access, your respect, validation, help, and maybe even your sacrifices to make their lives easy.
You are no more than a tool to them.
Your predictable buttons make it easy for them to manipulate you.
Unknowingly, you strip your power by undermining your worth. Slowly, it exhausts you. You try to understand and give excuses that maybe you are not enough.
But the truth is, nobody can give you what you want.
Seeking validation from others is a trap you set for yourself.
Ignoring your wisdom to accept others is a grave injustice you do to yourself.
The real change starts when you start to appreciate your life as much as you appreciate others.
The acceptance of others doesn’t mean rejecting yourself.
Many people think acceptance has to be one-sided. They think —
- If you accept yourself, you reject the other.
- If you accept others, you reject the self.
Instead, the truth is that when you fully accept yourself, when you accept your ignorance and dark parts, you are ready to accept others as they are.
But this stage can’t be reached when you keep on ignoring the self.
The starting steps are —
- Turning your attention inwards.
- Rejecting the outer voices.
- Rest in your inner self and feel things without shame.
This happens when you stop giving more value to what others think.
Everyone has their own perception of everything. Even your partner, parent, or child has their own life.
And you also have your own life.
Sabotaging yourself to fit into any role is going against your authentic self.
Healthy relationships form when you are in your own strength. Otherwise, you slowly become a liability who recharges on others’ energy.
The power is in knowing that true strength lies within you.
It knows when to say no without guilt, when to ignore others’ voices, and when to stand true in your genuine expression.
True power isn’t when someone backs you. It is in choosing your own self over what others perceive you.
Rest in your power.
Once Thich Nhat Hanh said, “To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”
Ask yourself, when you are in the process of accepting yourself —
- Who panics?
- Who resists and gets irritated?
- Who tries to push you into fear?
- Who supports you even when you don’t know who you are?
The answer reveals who is aligned with your growth.
Growing people encourage others to get comfortable in their skin. They have an open mind to explore what needs to be done.
Suppressed and scared people do the opposite. They fear you’ll outgrow and abandon them. This fear motivates them to manipulate you to stay where you are.
That is why people want power, money, position, and fame—to be special in the eyes of others and to control others when they are given power.
What if you do the opposite?
- If you rest in what you are unashamedly,
- If you shine your own light when you have no one to support you,
- If hateful or critical words do not easily bring you down.
What would happen?
This is when you are anchored in your absolute bliss. Then, every external situation loses control over you.
You become truly free. Free from people. Free from your triggers and reactions.
Your peace becomes unshakeable.
Final Thoughts
The people who pull you down never want you to grow. Those who make you feel guilty, scared, and shamed don’t want you to break their safety net.
The question is how authentically you want to live for yourself. Is your life an expression of what you are, or does it represent what other people want from you?
Because the course of your life depends on your answer and how you want to move ahead.
Because when you teach yourself that your light is worthy, you step out of the shadows of others.
Because when you stop caring what others think, everything falls into place.
