We’ve all heard the “crazy cat lady” stereotype: bitter old spinsters who would rather surround themselves with cats than to partner up with men, often having some sort of mental issues.
It goes without saying that most cat owners are not like that.
In fact, women with cats tend to be really great people and excellent romantic partners more often than not. Let me explain.
Cats are cute.
And anyone who appreciates cuteness enough to take care of a cat or two is more likely to be sweet and empathetic, two characteristics that make for an ideal relationship candidate.
Without sweetness or empathy, a relationship can feel cold and emotionally unfulfilling.
With the obvious out of the way, let’s get a little more scientific.
A 2015 study found that cat people, compared to dog people, scored lower in social dominance orientation and competitiveness.
“The association of being a dog person with SDO and competitiveness persisted when gender differences in pet preference and personality were statistically controlled. We concluded that individuals who are high on these traits tend to prefer submissive pets such as dogs, whose temperament complements their preference for dominance.” — Beatrice Alba, Nick Haslam (2015)
I consider myself a pretty dominant man and I am generally turned off by dominant women (please imagine the best possible kink-friendly definition of the word “dominant” that doesn’t paint me as one of those “red pill” assholes).
The study certainly isn’t saying that all dog owners have dominant personalities and all cat owners do not have dominant personalities, but there is at least a statistically significant trend.
An earlier study, however, found that dog owners scored higher in agreeableness, so take the results of both studies with a grain of salt.
Cat owners are smart.
A 2017 study found that cat people score higher on “general intelligence, abstractedness, and self-reliance.”
More intelligent people can be better communicators, and better able to be reasoned with whenever there’s a disagreement or misunderstanding in the relationship.
Cat owners are more practiced in respecting boundaries.
This isn’t from any psychological or scientific studies, but it’s something you will hear from time to time: since cats are more independent than most other kinds of pets, cat lovers are more sensitive and respectful of others’ boundaries.
What this could mean is that these lovely cat ladies would be very considerate of your feelings.
Of course, all these averages and generalizations will not hold true for every single cat-obsessed woman out there.
In my personal experience, though, most of the female feline fans I’ve met and dated did indeed possess all these positive traits.
Have you ever dated a woman with cats? What was it like? Tell me your experiences in the comments!
