Will these days someday be “The Good Old Days?”
Let’s face it, we’ve been through a lot in the last several years. I don’t think anyone can deny that. But 10 or 20 years from now, how will things look in the rear view mirror?
My first job was washing dishes at Sizzler back when those still existed.
For my younger readers, Sizzler was a steakhouse that also had a pretty amazing salad bar.
And a taco bar!
Seriously, you could make your own tacos.
I was there for four years and learned to work just about every position in the restaurant. It wasn’t the best job. And sometimes it was dirty, sweaty, unpleasant work.
But the thing is, all of these years later, I don’t look back on that time in my life with malice.
No way!
I worked with great people. We were like a family. And back then I didn’t realize how rare that type of situation is.
And I was young and had zero responsibilities. My only expense was owning my first car. And I lived 5 minutes from my job so traffic and commuting really wasn’t a thing.
So, I really only focus on the positive parts of that time in my life.
I don’t think about being overworked. I don’t think about the maggots that lived outside by the dumpster. I don’t think about jerkface customers.
I don’t think about how working the fryers broke my face out.
So I have to wonder, with all of the things that are wrong in the world right now, with all of the things that I personally have to deal with, will these days someday be the good old days?
Will the beauty of these moments shine through?
I think they will.
But I’ll just have to wait and see.
