Take a Guess!
I got off my phone feeling delighted. My boyfriend had canceled his last meeting of the day to get a jump start on our weekend. He was picking me up shortly for an early dinner.
As we roared down the street away from my house, he gave me a long glance as he took in my giddiness at this unexpected date night.
“Guess where I’m taking you for dinner?” he asked with a smile.
I perked up. Obviously, he had given this some thought. One of my favorite restaurants? A new place we had talked about trying?
“Coastal Kitchen!” I exclaimed. I didn’t even have to think about it. It was the first thing that came to mind — which also happened to sound especially alluring to me in that moment…
I hoped I was right.
Of course I was right. He had nothing planned. He simply knew that if he asked me the question in that way, my answer would tell him exactly where to take me.
Brilliant.
I admit it. I often draw a blank when asked to make a decision about where I want to eat. I appreciate a man who leads in this area and proposes a plan, from which I can then respond. Give me a starting point to work from.
And yes, I know it’s a simple question. But it shifts me from being in the feminine energy of flowing with a proposed plan to the masculine energy of planning and executing.
That’s what gets me stuck every time.
Somehow this fun little guessing game put me in a different mindset, which made it quick and easy for me to respond.
Now it was a game, not a decision.
Had I named a super swanky steakhouse where my filet would be $70, or Pedro’s Taco Truck where he once got food poisoning, he could then say, “You get one more guess,” and take me to the next place I named.
So if the first option is out of your range or comfort level, be ready to extend the game just a bit more. Just not to the point where it’s excessive.
…
Variations are key
Get creative in how you ask the question. Basically, he asked where I wanted to eat by asking it in a very creative way. The answers would be the same either way, but how he asked made a huge difference.
You can also narrow it down a bit… perhaps say, “Guess where I’m taking you that we haven’t been to yet (or in a while)” and see what she says.
Or “I’m making reservations at a fancy restaurant next weekend so you can wear that new dress you got… it’s a surprise, but I’ll let you make three guesses” — and then book one of those three restaurants and don’t tell her which one. Which makes it still a surprise.
Try this and get creative with finding your own variations. You may not be able to get away with this every time unless you make it a running game to see if she can maintain a streak of 100% correct guesses.
Which obviously, she will.
Because you are awesome that way. ❤
