Most men have a burning desire to achieve high levels of performance within their life. That includes performance in your career, relationships and personal life. As a man we tend to let our egos get in the way of admitting what emotions we are going through. We feel like we have to show how tough we are even if we are stressed, anxious, depressed, tired, frustrated or angry.
Yet the quality of our lives depends on the standards that we set for ourselves. Those individuals whose lives appear to continue to consistently grow and expand are the same ones who continue to raise the standards of their lives.
All of our standards begin with some basic foundations. Similarly, most high performers have characteristics that if you focus in on will help raise the quality of your own life.
Here are three of the most important things to focus on today towards becoming a high performer.
Energy
How often do you look at your energy levels? Are you ecstatic about getting your day started or do you dread getting out of bed? When you walk in the door and see your family or significant other is it the same type of energy as when you first met?
Your energy level is your superpower! The problem is that most people do not understand that you do not have to wait for energy. You do not have to eat a big meal and oftentimes that does the exact opposite. You can create energy!
We spend so much of our days sitting around working from our laptop, talking on the phone or watching TV we have almost become motionless. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services less than five percent of adults participate in at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.
When you ask people what’s the most important resource we possess? Many would answer time, but what’s more important is the energy you invest during that time.
You can live 100 years, work 40 years at a company or be married 70 years. But if you’re not passionate, fulfilled and filled with energy during that time it becomes stale and meaningless.
Take inventory of your energy levels throughout your day. Make a routine to move around more, if that’s going for a 20 minute walk each day. Create a habit when spending time with loved ones to be fully present and engaged because energy rich people are high performers.
Clarity
How clear are you on what you want out of your life? Are you planning and creating your life or letting your life just happen to you. Most people think they are planning their lives but when you have a conversation with them it’s typically vague or unclear.
This can be something as simple as setting your own goals and writing them down. Most people respond that they have goals but not written. We struggle to write our goals down out of fear. Fear deep within ourselves of being judged, fear of failure or fear that we do not know how we will achieve them.
We know if we write them down it will hold us accountable and that’s a large power in written goals. Jim Rohn once said, “…only three percent of adults have their goals written down, and that three percent earn more than all the other 97% combined.”
That same three percent are the high performers. Most people live their entire lives of autopilot without ever noticing it.
It’s worth the time to sit down and design your life. It’s simple and something you can start doing today.
Write down some 12 month goals, one month goals and before you go to bed write down one thing you can do the next day to move your closer to those goals. What do you want your relationships to look like? How about your career? What vacations do you want to experience? What are your financial goals? What type of person do you want to be?
The list is endless and that’s the beauty of this life is that we can create it for ourselves. We must start gaining more clarity.
Commitment
Are you committed or are you a dabbler? Most people have shiny object syndrome and bounce from one idea to the next. We see it in the health and fitness world with what’s the next best fad diet, supplements and workouts.
We see it in business when companies attempt to be everything for everyone instead of focused on their niche. Also when leaders and workers get excited about a new idea, try it one time and then abandon it.
High performers get clear on their goals and then invest endless amounts of energy into seeing their goals though. They stay committed because it’s something they believe in. If you have career goals or ideas that you genuinely feel will leave the world a better place, it’s your duty to see them through.
If you have commitments made in your relationships, with friends or kids see those through. We all crave a certain level of connection and bond with others and the first step towards meaningful relationships is through trust. Staying committed not only builds trust with others but with yourself too.
Life is meant for you to have all the happiness, wealth and joy that you desire. As countless personal development experts have said “Success leaves tracks and you do not have to reinvent the wheel.” This is a short list of what high performers work on in their lives.
You have the capability to boost your level of performance and success right now. Begin today taking some inventory of your energy, clarity and commitment levels.
