There are many things that can send you spiraling back into the darkness that takes your sobriety. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one or stress at work, the key is to keep yourself busy so that you don’t lose all of the hard-won work you put into overcoming the person you used to be. Luckily, there are quite a few activities out there that can take your mind off wanting to relapse. With that in mind, read on below for a few of the top activities to choose from.
Go to the Gym
As soon as you check out of rehab and start your outpatient rehab program, you need to start looking for activities that will help you stay busy and sober. One of the best activities to participate in is exercising. For many men, going to the gym is the best way to work off any stress, emotions, and strife they are dealing with throughout the day. If possible, pay for a monthly gym membership and work out as often as you can, especially if you are feeling the urge to visit friends from your past life.
Take Up a Hobby
Repairing an old car or upgrading your current car is a great activity to keep you busy for a few weeks at a time. Whether it’s using a supercharger kit to amp up the horsepower on that old car you love or getting new car seat covers for your interior, trying a new hobby or taking on a project is one of the best ways to ensure you are staying busy, especially with the holidays coming up. A hobby that you love, whether it’s working on old cars or building something with your hands, will keep your mind and your body busy and even help you sleep at night as well.
Attend Your Meetings
While this might not be a standard activity to keep you busy, attending your meetings on a weekly, or even a daily basis if needed, is an activity that will help you like no other. It’s important to have a wide network of support so you always have someone that knows what you’re going through. Attending your meetings might not be the most physical activity there is, but it will help when help is needed.
Adopt a Pet
While a pet won’t heal you, it will go a long way toward helping you to cope with your addiction. Owning a pet comes with responsibility, a responsibility that can give you a purpose and having a purpose is one of the best ways to ensure that you don’t relapse. This little creature, whether it’s a cat, a dog, or a lizard, is depending on you to keep it fed, safe, and loved. There is no better activity than that.
These are just a few of the activities out there to help you maintain your sobriety. From taking up a hobby to attending meetings and from adopting a pet to exercising at the gym, there are many ways to keep busy. You can do this and there is always help just a meeting away if you need it.
