There are two kinds of people: the ones who love the holidays, and the Grinches.
I’m a Grinch. Or a Scrooge, if you like.

Ever since Thanksgiving, I’ve been telling friends and family, “I must stop Christmas from coming! But how…?”

I’m not one of those who gets a case of the warm fuzzies all December long. I don’t get gushy about Christmas trees. I don’t count down the days till Christmas.

Now, it’s easy to write off Grinches like me. We just don’t get it. We’re just not in touch with our feelings. We just need our tiny hearts to grow three sizes, someday.

But I don’t think it’s that simple. Because I think the Grinch plays an essential role in Christmas celebration. You need one around so you can know how much fun you’re having.
Personally, I love Christmas. But I like to celebrate Christmas by pretending to complain about it.

If you look at it in the right light, Grinches offer a genuine service. Because when people like me say, “What’s so great about Christmas?”, it’s a chance for all you holiday-lovers out there to say, “But you just don’t get it! Christmas is wonderful!”

And isn’t saying the holidays are wonderful part of the joy of the season? Without people like me, you’d never get to say it.

So: they also serve who stand around and say, “Bah, humbug!”
