You, Me, and CTE
These videos and podcasts are a forged relationship between the Good Men Project and the Dr. Vibe Show. They form a collection of stories from parents and players, researchers, CTE/TBI support organizations, sports safety experts, and people with brain injuries that are spearheading support sites and programs to help parents and athletes make informed decisions about the repercussions of repetitive hits in contact sports and give help to those who are already suffering.
Introduction with Melvin Lars and Carol Bluestein
VIDEO: Melvin Lars is a Raiders’ former Defensive line coach for the Shreveport Pelicans, as well as numerous head and assistant coaching positions from Louisiana to California. Carol Bluestein is the GMP convocast leader for the Disposability of Men Social Interest Group which advocates for #StoppingCTE to preserve the healthy brains of our children and prevent the ravages of CTE to the athlete and their families.
Cyndy Feasel: “After the Cheering Stops”
VIDEO: Her husband, former NFL player Grant Feasel, died at the age of 52. She tells the tragic story of what life was like living with Grant Feasel, a center with the Seattle Seahawks who suffered repeated concussions and head trauma.Cyndy describes how Grant’s attempts at self-medicating his pain destroyed their marriage, devastated her family relationshipa, and left her destitute. Cyndy now raises awareness about CTE and head trauma injuries in sports and educates current athletes and parents of athletes at all levels about the potential damage that head injuries can cause. Melvin Lars and Larry Anderson: Secrets to Athletic Super Powers
PODCAST: Former pro-football players talk about the game, lack of “Informed consent,” restrictions on letting children play brain damaging sports, and alternatives activities to keep children active and also learn teamwork, leadership, and dedication to a goal. Larry Anderson is a former professional American football player who played cornerback and kick-returner for seven seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts. Anderson was inducted into the Louisiana Tech University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
Debra Pyka: Save Your Brain
PODCAST: Debra Pyka is an advocate and co-founder of Child Athlete Advocates, Save Your Brain and Faces of CTE. Her son Joseph died by suicide in 2012 and was later diagnosed with CTE. Prior to his death, Debra thought her son was simply acting out. She now devotes her time to educating other families so they don’t allow their children to participate in brain-damaging sports. Kimberly Archie-Faces of CTE
PODCAST: Kimberly Archie is a 39-year brain injury thriver, and mother of 3 who lost her son, Paul Bright Jr. in 2014 to CTE. He played Pop Warner from 1997 to 2004 and was found to have CTE after played after his death following an automobile accident in 2014. She is heralded as the nation’s leading advocate and expert on the prevention of the maltreatment of child athletes. Her legal work has been used to settle more than 50 sports injury lawsuits since 2008, including the landmark NFL brain injury case, and US Soccer litigation that removed headers for kids 10 and under. Currently, Kimberly manages National Cheer Safety Foundation, Faces of CTE and USA Sport Safety
