Mental health can unarguably be regarded as the defining crisis of the modern era. In the US, mental health has become a growing public health concern, with mental illnesses affecting approximately 20% of American adults. The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that the population of US adults aged 60 and older suffering from a mental disorder is projected to reach 15 million in 2030. Overall, these statistics paint a grim picture of mental health, whose effects are limited not just to individuals but families, communities, workplaces, and the economy at large. This reinforces the critical need for a broad-based intervention based on comprehensive support systems and compassion to tackle the crisis head-on.
Given the high stakes of the growing mental health issue, Abigail Addy has emerged as a beacon of hope as she strives to create meaningful change in her role as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor. With years of experience working with diverse communities from youth and marginalized groups to the elderly, Abigail has deep insight into mental challenges as well as how factors like isolation, physical health issues, and societal neglect make it all the worse. This explains her compassionate approach that draws upon evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to ensure her clients are well-equipped to navigate the most challenging terrains of human emotional experiences like anxiety, depression, and trauma and reclaim their lives.
“Seeing clients shift their perspective, manage their pain, and embrace the possibility of healing is profoundly rewarding,” she shares. For Abigail, it is no less a privilege to be a part of her client’s journey towards recovery which attests to her utmost dedication to her clients that goes far beyond traditional therapy. In fact, her success in the therapeutic space owes much to her ability to forge meaningful connections with clients that enable her to nurture emotional resilience from within. This reflects her holistic approach to mental health counseling that aims to dismantle the deeply intertwined connections between mental struggles and emotional well-being.
A poignant aspect of her work is with regard to the elderly population which remains one of the most overlooked demographics in mental health discussions. “Feelings of inadequacy, combined with isolation and health issues, increase the risk of elder abuse and neglect”. This calls for a multi-faceted approach that includes providing adequate support systems, and social opportunities alongside healthcare access so that these individuals can process their emotions and connect with others.
The pandemic was the turning point for medical professionals like Abigail that brought the issue of mental health to the forefront. She shares that isolation acts as a key trigger that makes human connections vital to emotional well-being.
Abigail’s work transcends individual therapy to turn mental health counseling into a critical intervention to address broader societal challenges such as homelessness and unemployment. “If someone feels unmotivated or hopeless, it becomes difficult to take action,” she notes. She is optimistic about the positive impact of counseling in building inner resilience and mindset change to enable individuals to maintain their sense of purpose.
Abigail views mental health professionals as key players in the mental health landscape to raise social awareness and plead for resources to make a difference. She firmly believes that it’s only through a collaborative approach involving government agencies, NGOs, and mental health professionals that we can effectively address the mental health needs of diverse populations. A passionate proponent of systemic change, she encourages younger professionals to specialize in critical areas like geriatric mental health to maintain a higher quality of life all Americans, especially for the most vulnerable.
