If you’re Jimmy Clausen, it was bad enough that the Carolina Panthers spent the No. 1 pick on Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. Now comes word that Newton doesn’t only want Clausen’s job, he wants his No. 2 jersey, too:
Cam Newton isn’t going to the Carolina Panthers to sit behind second-year quarterback Jimmy Clausen and he apparently isn’t looking to wear any other number than the No. 2 he wore during his Heisman Trophy last season at Auburn.
Well, Clausen is in no rush to part with his beloved deuce. And who can blame him? After all, the former Notre Dame standout was 1-9 as a starter for the Panthers in his rookie season last year, with three touchdown passes, nine interceptions and a quarterback rating of 55.8. If he gave up his number, he might regress to no wins in 2011. But if he retains it? Maybe he’ll remain the starter and go up to two victories this season. That’d be two victories for No. 2. Tough for superstitious people not to appreciate the significance of that.
“It’s mine right now,” Clausen said of his number. “We’ll see what happens.”
Hopefully he and Newton can come to an amicable decision on this matter. We certainly hope it doesn’t get to a point where a super fan intercedes on Newton’s behalf, ala Robert DeNiro in The Fan, who killed Benicio del Toro’s character because he wouldn’t give up his lucky number to DeNiro’s favorite player, played by Wesley Snipes.
Men killing men over uniform numbers is rather absurd, even when it’s done by a master thespian like Robert DeNiro.
