Schala, TVtropes are not discussing these things, they’re agreeing on them. They agree that mainstream culture is unjustly hypocritical about rape. End of story. For what I asked about in the post you first quoted to happen, “Rape is OK/funny when it’s female/male on male” should come with tropers arguing that this is actually justified in real life, just as there are tropers arguing that women get off having sex with psychopaths in real life. So everything you said was completely irrelevant. I asked to be shown something for me to change my mind, and you wasted both our time… Read more »
I’m not replying to a post.
I’m replying to a comment of yours that complains that TV tropes doesn’t discuss how men are more horrible than women when it comes to rape, and how male-on-female rape is so much more horrible than other types.
I’m not even ascribing motive here, those are your words.
Seriously Schala, just let it go. You haven’t understood the post you’re replying to, and I have tried you that for way too long already. Please stop making nonsensical answers, I have no way of replying to them when I don’t know what they’re about. It’s rude of you to pretend that you know better than me what my intentions are, and to continue to act as if you’ve proven some point I didn’t make. Just accept that you got the post wrong and move on.
Jay, all of my sentiments exactly! I posted it for the comments too.
Apparently, the cursor had focus on the email portion when typing something, which screwed up the email and thus the image. It was not wanted.
If you wanted to talk about something other than what goes on at that site, you’re free to do so, but don’t quote me talking about the site, start talking about something completely different with no explanation, and then act offended when I point out that you aren’t answering the post you’re quoting. Then have fun reading those tropes: Rape is Okay when it’s Female on Female Rape is Okay when it’s Female on Male Rape is Funny when it’s Male on Male and Rape is a Special King of Evil (you’ve guessed it: when it’s Male on Female) And… Read more »
re: Daisy’s link. Not to diminish the impact that the letter itself was meant to have, or to imply a condemnation on my part of the person who decided to share said letter with the world( wide web) , BUT the argument among the various commenters of various sites about entitlement versus a lack of empathy is giving me the best laugh I’ve had all day. An infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters could not produce half the hilarious apeshit humanity manages in a single internet comment thread. That said, fabricated or factual, that letter is… Read more »
@Schala: I reply to text I quote. I don’t bring stuff I wasn’t asked to bring from a site I only read occasionally (Yes, as much as you might be surprised, I’m not a troper, just a reader, of that site). If you want more vague or bizarre answers that reply to stuff I wasn’t asked about or that reply from stuff I’m not quoting, pay someone to do those reply, I don’t do absurd argumentation. The part you quoted was about TVtropes: “Show me the neutral discussion where the view that men are heavily inclined to rape women (but… Read more »

@Schala:
Sadly no. I asked to be shown a discussion on the TVtropes website. Your post neither gave that example, or explained why it wouldn’t be forthcoming. So there was no answer, just noise.
I didn’t like the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire. I felt that Martin was pulling a bait-and-switch: it starts with what feels like a setup to an adventure story – a horribly unprepared and divided kingdom is about to be invaded by the local equivalent of the Legions of Hell – but follows up with nothing but pages and pages of political intrigue taking place within that horribly unprepared kingdom, with said invasion nowhere in sight. I was much happier with the rest of the books when I read with the understanding that no, there really… Read more »

Read the quote I’m replying to, and the answer will savagely jump in your face.
@ Ab Re: Robin Hobb Ha! 😀 Yes, good thing. I read a lot of her ‘Megan Lindholm’ stuff when I was little. I don’t think I’ve looked at anything since the Farseer books, tho’. She’s very good, but those Farseer books were a great example of the sort of high-class (and I mean, like everyone in the book is waist deep involved with nobility, not that Lindholm herself is elitist or anything) socio-political macroview fantasies I’ve personally gotten really burnt out on. I feel like I’m watching the cast of Jersey Shore slum it at a Renaissance Fair with… Read more »
@Schala: Men are not asked if they’re raped pretty much all the time. When they are, people ask if men raped them, and most often, no penis = not bad enough to worry about. As much as I usually enjoy playing the Oppression Olympics with you, what exactly does that have to do with my post? @The Kings Raven: The thing to remember about Private Zoller is that the typical protagonist described by the dogged nice guy trope is normally rejected by the female lead off the bat and carries on trying to win her affections regardless. Often with “wacky… Read more »
@ ab Have you tried George R. R. Martin? Yes, once. My wife has all of his books. That was an odd experience, the book grabbed me really fast and then lost me even faster. Most of the praise I heard for his books revolved around how awesome his characters were. Well, I thought his writing was good, and he set a great tone, and then I flat out didn’t like any of the characters he was introducing at that point in the story. There’s realistic flaws and then there’s chapters of tedious baggage. People talk about Tolkien and his… Read more »
I found this and wanted to share: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2454#comic
@pocketjacks Interesting reading; thanks for that. @AB The thing to remember about Private Zoller is that the typical protagonist described by the dogged nice guy trope is normally rejected by the female lead off the bat and carries on trying to win her affections regardless. Often with “wacky comedy hijinks” that would be highly illegal stalkerish behaviour in the real world. So if you predict his behaviour by precedent from previous media rather than real life (which is a reasonable thing to do, it tends to be more accurate for fictional characters) his final actions aren’t automatically the logical conclusion… Read more »

So yeah. Neutral my ass.
Ah, I’ve been misinformed. Standing corrected.
Though I doubt the documentary-buzz had no effect. Never believe anything until it has been officially denied.
Well, Fingeniuer, it should be noted that cutting of and not renewing is not equivalent although the result is the same. There were set aside 56 million NOK for genderbased research the last 4 years(2008-2012). When the four year period were over the Norwegian Research Council declines to extend this with a new 56 million for a new 4 years. (It would’ve been the fourth program). The reason given by the Research Council in their press release were that gender research now is a well established field and can compete adequately for funds in the ordinary research grant pool. The… Read more »
“Is some Norwegian school shutting down a “gender studies” program because of its bias?”
Forgot: No, not some school. The government budget has cutted off the funding for research of gender studies entirely. So either the faculties will find other sources of funding (probably some stuff like teaching has external sources) or the work of faculties gets dispersed across other departments. Norway pretty much swims in money and holds strong traditions in state-feminism. So it’s obviously a political decision.
Social justice works both ways. Norway obviously reached a conclusion that GS-departments were doing more harm than good.
@pocketjacks: “Chances are?” So since you don’t know, the default option is to assume the scenario that’s most favorable to your emotional prejudices? No. The default option is to assume it was where I was looking at the time, which was the entries on the tropes themselves, as well as the related pages (the discussions of it, truth in television etc.). If I was arguing in bad faith, I wouldn’t have even mentioned the extremely tiny chance that I was looking at the forum at the time, because I should I known you’d latch onto that and ignore everything else.… Read more »
There is very little bisexual porn that I can find that is what I like: tender, even romantic, with kissing and equal power relations (so I’m not a dom or sub. Sue me). I want happy adults enjoying themselves in groups. Why is that so hard to find? It’s hard to find that kind of thing in porn regardless of the gender of the performers. 🙁 “Subverted by Private Zoller in Inglourious Basterds. He acts exactly like a romantic comedy protagonist, as this trope demands, but, of course, there are a few problems. Not least of all is the fact… Read more »
Well, the first and last parts are most closely related to common feminist gender studies (episodes about “are genders alike” and “nature vs. nurture”). Though the rest are also pretty good in exposing stuff “scientists” do not want to research. Such as are there differences within races, where violence stems from, is homosexuality biological etc… The method is mostly about presenting different views of scientists to each other (e.g. a doctor is shown an interview of a social scientists view of gender being socially constructed, then the social scientist is shown the video of the doctor reacting to the point… Read more »
