Oh yeah, I miss my little monster too! So who has played Diablo 3? I like the voice acting on the lady Barbarian (level 34, Nightmare, named HULK, yes with the caps) and the way that she is physically bigger than the other characters and NPCs, but it seems like when Blizzard realised they may have made a decent female character they did an about face. They made the Wizard take of all her clothes, the Demon Hunter wear combat stilettos (the art book described her theme as “sexy”) and paint both genders of the Witch Doctor as nonsense colonial… Read more »
Pretty much, yeah, that about covers it. It’s Blizzard, though…so frankly I’m just surprised they managed the female Barbarian.
Plus, did anyone else hear one of the dialogue bits from the Scoundrel where he seems to imply he might be bisexual? On the one hand I was like…what Blizz has a potentially-vaguely-bisexual character? I am shocked! On the other hand it was a bit like, well and of course they made it the stereotypically non-committal, thief guy. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it.
I spend all my time playing another videogame. I don’t do much fashions and “everyone plays that, OMG I gotta play too”. My buying FF13-2 the day it came out was a relatively rare phenomenon, happening for the first time in ever.
If I try Diablo 3, it will be in 1 year when less people play.
I did that with Fallout: New Vegas, and goodness am I happy I did that…because I managed to wait until all the bugs were ironed out, well, most of the bugs anyway.

Gotta say, this is pretty jarring. I miss my little monster dude.
Recently I had to find snow removal and landscapers for my condo association. I ran across many ads. Some had a woman or minority owned company in the ad. I never contacted any of those companies, but hired a company owned by a male Hispanic instead of one owned by a male white. The cost was cheaper and the service is excellent. Are you guys more likely or less likely to hire someone with woman or minority owned business in the ad?

So what do you guys think of prescriptive feminism? Do you think it’s harmful to the feminist cause?
That depends on what feminist cause you’re talking about. There are far too many camps within feminism to answer that question. At least the MRM is pro men and boys. I don’t even know if prescriptive feminism is even pro girls and women.
I think most MRM people aren’t necessarily pro-man or pro-boy; just look at how often they use the term “mangina.” I think far too many MRAs are merely pro-men-and-boys-who-are-like-them.
There was a discussion in the MRM on some sites I looked at before settling on GMP, which is a nice mix of MRAs and feminists. One theme that kept coming up was that women are not the enemy, but rather anyone, both men and women, who support policies that are detrimental to men and boys. The way I read it was that the MRM isn’t even hostile to policies benefiting only women, but many feminists I’ve encountered are outright hostile to programs/initiatives that benefit primarily men. Kind of puts things in perspective. When they use the term mangina (I… Read more »
I think your using different judgements for feminists and MRA. Yes, mangina is sexist, and it shouldn’t be used. Its offensive to pretty much everyone. However if using a gendered slur is reason for dismissal your going to have to dismiss probably most feminists as well. Mansplainning is pretty much the same thing, so do feminists who use that not care about men (and therefore equality? Or the classic: does using “dick” as an insult mean you don’t care about equality? I might be wrong, you might be using the same judgements for MRA’s and feminists, but then you wouldn’t… Read more »

@Dvärghundspossen I just stated some facts. I am not very concerned with whether what this 19 year old letter writer have written really happened to him or not. But dismissal should at least be grounded in facts. Here is the relevant section from his email: I also become of the privileged white males who developed heart problems at age 18, but of course, couldn’t afford a doctor. I was going to go to a free heart screening at a local college, but whoops…. “FEMALES ONLY”, courtesy of the “Women’s radical feminist men hating Heart association of a women-only America”, or… Read more »
Yeah, I meant he claimed he was turned down for being a WHITE male when it comes to jobs, not hearts. I know there’s affirmative action going on in the job market and educations, but that normally means that if you have several applicants who are EQUALLY QUALIFIED you make your choice between them based on gender, ethnicity or the like. If somebody says “we’re not hiring white males now” it implies they’d choose LESS qualified people just because of their gender or colour. Is THAT really legal? I googled “police academy” and “women” in Swedish, and found an article… Read more »

@Tom Smekens: I only read the second link and don’t really know what to make of it: Does she think that women that stay at home while their husband is earning money are somehow lazy, stupid and don’t want to make choices? Because that would be absurd as housework, including cleaning, cooking, shopping etc. takes a lot of time and can be quite stressful, and it also involves making choices.

Tobias, it’s all about the garlic. While you are roasting the eggplant, roast your garlic along with it. Take a head of garlic, chop off about the upper 4th of it (the idea here is to remove the peel from the top of each clove), and pack it up in aluminium foil. Before you close up the top of the aluminium foil, drizzle olive oil over the head of garlic, and sprinkle salt and whole cumin on top. Then, just put it in the oven next to the eggplant! Both even need exactly 1 hour in the oven. I always… Read more »
And this happens with colour too? He specifically stated that on several occasions he had been turned down for being not only male but also white. Plus the heart story still seems weird. If he already knows he has a heart problem, wouldn’t he need treatment rather than screening? If he knows he has a problem and can’t afford a doctor, what help would a free screening be anyway? And then it seems like the heart is suddenly no problem any longer, since he could hitch a train ride across America and start a revolution despite it? If he has… Read more »

@Dvärghundspossen There are several places where heart screening ihas been offered for free to women only. Often in relation with some campaign to address the fact that heart and vascular diseases are a large underreported cause of death among women (although not greater than it is for men I believe – statistics are welcome as I am too lazy and the weather outside is too nice for me to look that up now). There are also other places here heart screening are offered for free to both genders. I have never seen a case where free heart screening has been… Read more »

I once applied for a Ph.d position, where I was told that they only accepted women, to achieve gender parity. So yes, it happens.
Whether Rebecka made it up herself or really got an email, the events described therein hardly happened for real. Okay, I’m not American, but I find it very hard to believe that there are hospitals in your country that won’t treat men simply because of their gender, or that people are denied work just because they’re white males. I mean, isn’t explicitly saying “we’re not hiring you because you’re of the wrong colour and gender” illegal in the entire western world? And then this poor and ill kid is suddenly cruising around in LA? Where did he get the car… Read more »

If I COULD work without driving myself insane or overstressed, I would. It would give me a bit more income to be entertained. But although I could hit engineer levels of pay grades, I have no interest in being rich, or even having enough income to actually invest for old age (I hope I’ll die before then, or will do on the welfare equivalent – either way the staff of old people’s houses treats you like a corpse with money).

“14? lets see, that was in 1996… IIRC, I was writing internet database applications in C++, programming in java, head coder on a MUD, and surfing for porn” In 1996 I was also 14. I didn’t have an internet-able computer. Or much interest in programming stuff (even if I had the capability). I discovered console RPGs on SNES at the time. Since I can’t think of anything better to say, I’ll just add that I have little idea what other 14-year-olds were like when I was that age. By then I had given up on socialization because my parents could move at any time (and often moved 2 or 3 times over the course of a year) and I often skipped out on school to go to the library (usually no one at the libraries questioned that, oddly enough) or to teach myself practical skills. Because I had the philosophy of “never let school get in the way of your education”.

@Monkey: At 14, I was playing Magic: the Gathering, making my very first costume from scratch without a lick of help from my folks (the Dented Helmet craft foam armor tut to make a Helm’s Deep elf for seeing RotK in, if anyone’s interested), studying world religions, discovering my BDSM inclinations while simultaneously being uninterested in having sex, and wishing I were a boy. Booze? What’s booze? I think it was only a a couple years ago, actually, that I overcame my abject hatred and fear of the smell of alcohol.

I suspect the latter, I think they want him to be too much of a Bro to be bisexual.
Yeah, I suspect that’s true. Never underestimate the delusional impact of wishful thinking. 😉
