In the Good Men Project’s Political Activism Social Interest Group, led by GMP publisher Lisa Hickey, we discussed fair elections which may mean going to Proportional Representation (PR) and Ranked Choice Voting (RCV).
Why? No one party should have a stranglehold on our country.
The 2016 presidential election year saw many issues with our election process, including gerrymandering, broken or hacked voting machines, and an irresponsible Electoral College. With these processes hindering the “one person one vote” expectation in this country, something needs to be done. We need to ensure every vote matters and the people’s will is stronger than the oligarchy’s.
“How?” Two ideas are out there and we have an obligation to consider them.
First is Proportional Representation. Our country is determined to maintain a two-party system. As a result, we are subject to the GOP conservative rich-only matters philosophy which silences all opposition from the Democratic Party and the majority of people in this country. PR would allow a multi-party ballot and (this is new and important) a multi-party representation in the House.
Each party would get the number of seats apportions by the percentage of people it represents. From Wikipedida: Proportional representation (PR) characterizes electoral systems by which divisions in an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. If n% of the electorate support a particular political party, then roughly n% of seats will be won by that party. The essence of such systems is that all votes contribute to the result: not just a plurality, or a bare majority, of them. The most prevalent forms of proportional representation all require the use of multiple-member voting districts (also called super-districts), as it is not possible to fill a single seat in a proportional manner. In fact, the implementations of PR that achieve the highest levels of proportionality tend to include districts with large numbers of seats.
Second is Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). Every voter would have the option of ranking their choice for an elected office. If no one receives greater than 50%, the votes from the lowest ranked get reapportioned based on the voters’ choices. That continues until a candidate wins. No vote is thrown away. Every vote matters.

We want to hear your point of view: Are you happy with our current election process? Do you feel your vote mattered?
If you were asked how to change or fix our current election process, what would you suggest? How would you ensure that those elected were elected because they represented the will of the people?
In your opinion, how do we make sure that any president elected has the support of over half the country’s population? That those we elect are representatives of the people and make decision based on the will and needs of their electorate?
