A good video downloader has one job: give you the original file, with sound, without a watermark, and without asking for your password. Plenty of tools still get part of that wrong.
You’ve probably seen it happen. You paste a link and get a silent clip, a blurry file, or a download button that opens three ad tabs. This guide covers what to check in any downloader, our picks for each platform, and how to save videos on iPhone, Android, and desktop.
What Makes an Instagram or Pinterest Video Downloader “the Best”?
The best downloader saves the original MP4 from a public post, keeps the audio, and works in your browser without a login. It doesn’t add its own logo, re-compress the video, or hide the real download button among ads.
Speed and design are nice extras. The file you end up with is what counts.
Why You Can’t Just Save Videos From Instagram and Pinterest
Pinterest keeps videos inside the app
Most video pins have no download option. Tapping Save only adds the pin to a board, so you still need the app and a connection to watch it. If the creator deletes the pin, it disappears from your board too. A Pinterest video downloader solves this by saving the actual file to your device.
Instagram’s download button has catches
Instagram lets you download Reels from public accounts through the Share menu. But the saved video carries an Instagram watermark with the creator’s username. Creators can switch downloading off, and Reels that use licensed music save without any sound. Your Saved collection is only a bookmark, not an offline copy.
Screen recording is a last resort
A screen recording captures the status bar, captions, and buttons, often at lower quality, and can pick up notification sounds. You’ll also need to trim it afterwards. A dedicated downloader saves the real file instead.
7 Things to Check Before You Trust a Video Downloader
- Honest quality claims
No downloader can make a video sharper than its upload. Most Reels and pin videos top out at 1080p, and many are lower. A site promising 4K on everything is upscaling or exaggerating. Look for tools that promise original quality. - Sound that actually comes through
Many Pinterest videos stream picture and sound separately, and weaker tools only grab the picture. On Instagram, licensed music is the usual cause. Quick test: download a video you know has sound. - No login, no forced installs
No legitimate downloader needs your Instagram or Pinterest password to save a public post. Be just as wary of sites pushing .apk or .exe files. An optional app from an official app store is fine; a surprise installer is not. - Works with the links you copy
Pinterest uses full pin links and short pin.it links. Instagram has Reels, video posts, and carousels. A good tool accepts whatever you paste. - A clean file
You should get exactly what the platform serves: no added watermark and no re-compression. - Ads that don’t pretend to be buttons
Ads are fine. Fake download buttons and surprise redirects aren’t. If you’re closing tabs to reach your file, move on. - Respect for your privacy
No email sign-up and no stored history of your links. A site without a privacy page is a red flag.
Our Best Picks: Linkgrab.io for Pinterest, ClipDeck for Instagram
Disclosure: Linkgrab.io and ClipDeck are built by our team. Use the checklist above to judge them the same way you’d judge any other tool.
We use one tool per platform because Instagram and Pinterest change their link formats and video players often, and a single-platform tool is easier to keep working when they do.
For Pinterest: Linkgrab.io
Linkgrab.io saves Pinterest videos, images, and GIFs from a pin link. Paste the link, check the preview, and download.
The preview shows whether you copied the right pin and whether it has sound before anything is saved. If you save pins often, the Linkgrab.io Android app has a built-in Pinterest browser. Any sign-in happens on Pinterest’s own page inside the app, and downloads still work only for public pins.
For Instagram: ClipDeck
ClipDeck is an Instagram video downloader for public Reels and video posts. Copy the link, paste it in, and save the video to your device. It’s useful when Instagram’s own download button is missing, or when you want the file without Instagram’s watermark.
Both tools have the same limits as any downloader: they only work with public content, can’t recover deleted posts, and can’t improve a video beyond its original upload.
How to Download Instagram and Pinterest Videos, Step by Step
Pinterest videos with Linkgrab.io
- Open the pin and tap Share > Copy link.
- Paste it into Linkgrab.io.
- Check the preview, then tap Download.
Instagram Reels and videos with ClipDeck
- Open the Reel or post and tap the Share icon (paper plane) > Copy link.
- Paste it into ClipDeck.
- Tap Download.
Moving the video to your iPhone camera roll
On iPhone, browser downloads go to the Files app, not Photos. Your download probably worked; you just need to move it:
- Open Files > Downloads.
- Tap the video.
- Tap Share > Save Video.
On Android
Videos save to your Downloads folder and usually appear in your gallery within seconds. If one doesn’t, move it into Movies or DCIM using Files or My Files.
On Windows or Mac
Copy the post’s address from the browser bar and paste it into the right tool. The file lands in Downloads. If the video opens in a tab instead, right-click it and choose Save video as.
Download Not Working? Quick Fixes
“Invalid link” or nothing happens
You probably copied a profile or board link, or extra text came with it. Copy the link again from Share > Copy link and paste only the link.
No sound in the saved video
First check whether the original has audio. If it’s an Instagram Reel with licensed music, the sound can’t be saved. Otherwise, the tool only grabbed the video stream, so try one that keeps audio. On Pinterest, the preview in Linkgrab.io lets you check for sound before saving.
Can’t find the video
On iPhone, look in Files > Downloads. On Android, check Downloads and move the file into DCIM.
Private accounts, secret boards, deleted posts
These won’t download. Downloaders only see public content, and a site promising private videos is usually after your login.
The video looks blurry
If it’s blurry on the platform too, that’s the source quality. If it’s sharp there but blurry after downloading, the tool compressed it, so switch to one that keeps the original file.
Is It Legal to Download Instagram and Pinterest Videos in the US?
Saving a public video to watch offline yourself is generally low-risk, but it doesn’t make the video yours. Reposting it, editing it into your own content, or using it commercially without permission can infringe the creator’s copyright.
Keeping a recipe Reel to cook from is personal use. Uploading it to your own page is publishing someone else’s work. The account where you found a video isn’t always its creator, so trace it to the source before asking permission or giving credit. If a creator has turned off downloads, respect that.
Instagram and Pinterest also have their own terms of use, and using third-party downloaders may not fit within them. This is general information, not legal advice. For commercial use, speak to a copyright lawyer.
Downloader vs. Instagram’s Built-In Download vs. Screen Recording
| Dedicated downloader | Instagram’s own download | Screen recording | Board or Saved collection | |
| Quality | Original file | Original, with watermark | Usually lower | Original, in-app only |
| Watermark | None | Instagram logo + username | On-screen clutter | None |
| Sound | Yes, with a good tool | Removed on licensed music | Can pick up device sounds | Yes |
| Offline | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Works on | Public Instagram and Pinterest posts | Public Reels, if the creator allows it | Anything on screen | Both |
Use boards and collections for inspiration. Use Instagram’s button for a quick share where the watermark doesn’t matter. For a clean offline copy with sound, use a dedicated downloader.
The Bottom Line
The right downloader gives you the original file with sound, with no watermark, no login, and no ad maze. Test any tool with one video you know has audio, and you’ll have your answer in under a minute.
For Pinterest, Linkgrab.io’s preview step and Android app make saving easy. For Instagram, ClipDeck gets you the file without relying on Instagram’s own button.
