How to Ground a Server Rack: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Find the Grounding Point on Your Rack
Most racks have a dedicated grounding point – a threaded stud, green screw, or hole with a ground symbol on the top, bottom, or side frame. Check your manual. If none exists, drill a hole and attach a grounding lug.
Important: Scrape away paint or powder coating around the point. Paint is an insulator and prevents proper contact.
Step 2: Locate the Facility Ground (Earth)
Find your building’s main ground – a grounding busbar (copper bar) near the electrical panel, a ground rod, or building steel. Consult an electrician if unsure. This is your target for server rack earthing.

- A common grounding busbar runs along each row of racks.
- Each rack connects to the busbar with a short AWG #2 or #6 copper strap.
- The busbar connects to the building’s grounding electrode at one single point (single-point grounding) to avoid ground loops.
- Raised floor pedestals and cable trays are also bonded to the system.
- Annual resistance testing with a ground resistance tester is required.
