How doctoral student Robert Reece blows off steam.
Being a black student in an elite PhD program can be difficult and rewarding, but from day to day it’s tough to predict whether the being in the department will be more difficult or more rewarding. The rewarding days are great and remind us why we chose to come to grad school. Difficult days can be demoralizing, especially when they seem to outnumber the good days, but we almost always find a way to cope. Some drink. Others run. A few engage in a variety of … more reckless activities. But I don’t drink, and though I like to work out, it doesn’t turn my bad days into good days, and I’m not afforded the opportunity to play football and basketball as much as I’d like, so I decided to try to introduce a little whimsy into my life by re-adopting a childhood hobby: Legos.
I’m not a hardcore collector, by far, though my collection is quickly outgrowing the space I allocated for it, but on nights when I choose to stay in, I find calm and happiness in assembling a new set or posing the mini-figs (the little, awesome Lego people). I decided to share a bit of my happiness with you all through some very amateur photography. Maybe it’ll make someone else smile for a few minutes today.

Excellent!!! I very recently recovered my old LEGOs, and it has been such an enriching experience. Glad to see someone else enjoying a creative outlet from the ages of yore!
Awesome. My son and I love Legos too, but if I’m being honest half the ones he has are sets that I just liked and wanted to put together.
