Do you celebrate
St. Patrick’s Day?
It occurred to me as I watched a St. Patrick’s Day themed episode of a current sitcom, that I haven’t had a single thing to do with the holiday/excuse to get hammered since I was in school. And the last memory I have of that is of being chastised by our class president for saying “Why would I? I’m not Irish,” when I was asked by another student why I wasn’t wearing green.
I have nothing against the fine folks of Ireland and wish them all the happiness in the world, but this is one of those social occasions I’m never going to take part in. I’m not a huge drinker, but when I do imbibe I do so because I want to, not out of any calendar-imposed obligation. Also, I get enough leprechaun jokes the other 364 days of the year–I’d be kinda dumb to go out on the day when they might actually make sense.
So, how about you? Are you a St. Paddy’s enthusiast? Do you go all out? Or do you just wear a splash o’green to keep your co-workers quiet?
I don’t celebrate because I’m not Irish, and neither are my kids. I speak often of how I resent the appropriation of Dia de los Muertos, Cinco de Mayo, etc. so it would be pretty shitty of me to appropriate another culture’s celebration. However! I definitely ALWAYS make sure my kids & I are wearing something green to avoid pinches and hassles.
