You Laugh But It’s True – Trailer from Day 1 Films on Vimeo.
Comedy plays countless roles in society, the most important gift comedy give us is the opportunity to relate to other human beings in ways we may not be able to reach otherwise. The laughter softens the lines that divide us and shortens the distance between us. Meaningless everyday observations (Jerry Seinfeld), profound statements about our deepest insecurities (Louis CK), the things that make us squirmy and uncomfortable (Sarah Silverman) and some of our deepest social justice issues like poverty, race, discrimination, grief and loss, politics and more all become casual conversation when we’re led by talented comedians.
One guy who is exposing both the personal and the political in his comedy is Trevor Noah, a comedian from South Africa. Noah is a relative newcomer to comedy, and a new documentary from director David Meyer shows the drama that went into Noah organizing his first one-man show.
You can view the documentary online, for $1.99 on Vimeo.
The film is going to be shown in Los Angeles on July 23rd. The fantastic, funny, and insightful Baratunde Thurston (author How to Be Black, co-founder Cultivated Wit, formerly of The Onion ) will be interviewing Meyer after the showing. If you’re a film or comedy fan and you’ll be around, this is a show you don’t want to miss.
