Being a dad in the 21st century isn’t easy. That’s why I like a program that makes saving for college a little less difficult.

As we have written about here many times on The Good Men Project — it’s hard to be a dad today. Dads more than ever want to be an active, engaged part of their children’s lives, from the moment they are born til way beyond when they empty the nest. And yet they still feel an enormous responsibility to be “The Provider”, and to be sure that no matter what happens, their children will get the care, the necessities and the education they need.
That’s why a program like UPromise is so…well, promising. I don’t have to change my behavior in any way—but I can save for college every time I shop. Whether I go to grocery stores like Hannaford, Star Market or Safeway or the frequent stops to CVS or other drugstores. I just download coupons direct to my card — I save on products I buy every day and get money for college too. I can save at online stores like Best Buy, Lowe’s, Target and Apple — even save with Amazon.com purchases. Browse around the Upromise website — I had to work to find a place that I shop that wasn’t part of the Upromise program.
And Upromise is bigger than I had ever imagined. Members have received more than $800 million through Upromise. Most of the over 850 retailers in the Upromise network seem to average about 5% cash back, but if you use the Upromise credit card, you can earn up to 10 percent or more cash back. Money earned through Upromise can be put in a 529 college savings plan, used to pay down eligible student loans, deposited in a Sallie Mae savings account—or, you can simply get what you’ve earned in a check.
Upromise is free to join. Sign up quickly — March is Bonus College Savings Month at Upromise. Share your savings tips for a chance to win $500 in your Upromise account. It’s as simple as pressing the “Like” button on the Upromise Facebook page and sharing a college savings tip. The contest begins March 3 and the winner is announced March 26. Details are available at Facebook.com/Upromise. Also during March Bonus College Savings month, nearly 300 online retailers are offering 7- 20 percent cash back on eligible purchases.
Upromise promises to make the whole process of saving for college a little less overwhelming.
