When she first began experiencing mental health issues as a teen, Arielle’s parents sent her away to therapeutic programs – first a camp, then a boarding school. It was in these environments that Arielle found an environment where they could comfortably come out as trans – or so she thought. Her school therapist outed Arielle to her parents, and then her school encouraged the faculty and student body to dismiss and ignore her trans identity. This gaslighting continued for nearly two years until after graduation, when Arielle eventually found a truly trans-inclusive environment and was able to finally live their truth.
