It all started on an ordinary evening when a 26-year-old woman wanted to try her hand at online dating. By no means was she itching to get someone, but the lack of romantic interest in her life had started to bug her. Setting up the profile sounded like such a practical thing to do, but it wasn’t long before she found herself swiping left much more than right. Nothing really jumped out at her-until him.
…
His picture was arresting. He stood there, his face lit up by a yellow light somewhere in the distance that seemed to make his features glow. His gaze, directed somewhere away from the camera, was seductive; his wavy hair looked much like the soft undulations of the sea. A plain black shirt complemented his look, adding to the charm with an air of ease. She felt her hand hesitate, felt her breath catch, and then, almost instinctively, she swiped right.
“It’s a match.”
For a second, she felt a pang of guilt. Was this all she was shallow? She had always avoided the men that seemed only interested in how she looked, yet here she was, smitten with nothing but a picture. Determined to prove to herself she was better than that, she resolved not to text him first.
But then, he texted her.
The general small talk started their conversation, soon turning to become more personal. He admitted to still reeling from the end of a long-term relationship; his ex had married someone else two years ago and he was still trying to heal. She wished him well, feeling a pang of empathy, but for some reason, she didn’t respond after that.
…
A few days later, out of curiosity, she checked up on him. To her surprise, he asked if they could meet. It was during the holiday time, so she agreed.
He picked her up from her place, and since none of them had a destination in mind, they chose to take a night drive. The night breeze was cool and easy, with effortless conversations between them. He shared about starting a business, and she spoke of her own aspirations of life. They talked through the night, and by morning at 5 a.m., they were both so amazed at how things had gone so well with just two people being able to connect with each other. He told her that he had to start working on his business that very day, dropped her home, and later sent a text saying how glad he was to have met her.
…
The following night, he called again. He had an event near her place and asked if they could meet up. Sounding really tired, he said he hadn’t slept since the night drive. She had to go to work the next day, so she invited him to head home, but time passed by and neither one of them wanted to leave.
He lay on the bed, and she sat on the sofa; in a little while, they were watching a movie together. Soon, the screen lost its magic, and they were talking again. Then he did confess that he wanted to kiss her the previous night but restrained himself. She did not know what to reply or say to him. She didn’t want him to know that she had been crushing on him even prior to meeting him in person.
…
But then he moved closer, and before she knew it, their lips met. The kiss was electric, and soon they lost themselves in each other. What started with a kiss went further, until they spent the night entwined in a swirl of emotions and desires. It was one of those completely connected moments, living in the now.
He drove her to work the next day, then they parted ways. Afterwards, they continued to text each other, sharing tidbits of themselves, but messages did slow down. They knew they went different ways, but he will always hold a special spot in her heart. She does check his social media from time to time, thinks that the selfless and unconditional feeling she had for him would suffice, so long as they were both okay, it would matter.
