The Deuce, which officially premiered on Sunday, is the brainchild of Simon and frequent collaborator George Pelecanos. It focuses on New York City in the ‘70s and ‘80s—specifically, the widespread prostitution and burgeoning pornography industry. The Deuce stars James Franco, who actually plays twin characters Frankie and Vincent Martino, sometimes in the same scene thanks to TV magic. Maggie Gyllenhaal also plays a pivotal role as Eileen “Candy” Merrell. The Atlantic calls it “the rightful heir to The Wire,” and NPR was equally as complimentary, saying, “Those compelling, artfully drawn characters keep you enthralled even as the show goes about the slow business of showing how pimps, prostitutes, the mob and police helped turn a back-alley pursuit into a billion-dollar industry.” The Deuce earned a 97 percent fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though its audience score is at 70 percent. Over the last few days, Social is closer to the audience scores, giving the show 73 percent positives.–Alex Shultz
