so this kid in my chemistry class called
me a n****r so frequently you’d have
thought he had forgotten my name
I never thought that my tongue will
betray me the way it had others i sat
there looked his bigotry square in the
face I saw my rage clenched its fists so
I said destruction to his surface like
motor cells
I made bruises on his skin so black that
it looked like a D gentrified Brooklyn C
maybe I shouldn’t have snacks maybe his
jaw wouldn’t have if I didn’t see I hit
him with water hoses drowning out the
sounds
hit him with nightsticks in my knuckles
I hit him with every apology I’ve ever
made to this skin for every time nigger
made a crater in my pride I let it sting
his like a whip I could have sworn I
heard no master come out his lips but I
did not stop I hit him for every slime
to slur slipped out serenading him with
the Sweet Chin Music I taught myself to
play this boy this boy would never call
me a nigger again
hye-won but this this didn’t happen I
let a white boy called me outside my
name out of fear or better said out of
necessity because of the way my mother
reminds me of my surroundings i deceived
myself into muzzling my angry she says
suburbia will suffocate her son doesn’t
know the blunt smoke did that already
and ain’t a blunt wrap the perfect
metaphor for my blackness always being
cracked open contents being spilled out
to make room for something new to be
consumed to dissipate when they are done
with me I thought that if I let it go he
would leave me alone knew that if I
struck him with more from the baton that
will break my back so I sat there and I
laughed a big hard life show with that
left my lips is uneasily as it ever had
is my rage rattled his cage sat there
and it’s cuffs screamed at the top of
its lungs and added to the tally another
day had been made to lie inside of me I
hope it knows I’m sorry I hope it knows
I hope I know I’m sorry
