Car accidents are a significant concern for many people. They not only cause physical injuries but can result in emotional and mental damage as well. The Central government imposes various traffic rules for road safety, but most people aren’t even concerned about following these rules. In the U.S, 3000 auto accidents every month are reported, and likewise, there is no guarantee that you will never have a car accident.
This blog post will provide nine strategies that may help reduce your chances of getting into an accident or make it less severe if one does occur.
Let’s take a look at these nine strategies.
1. Pull into traffic slowly
When you are preparing to enter a significant road, make sure that no cars are speeding towards you. If they are coming too quickly, wait for them to pass before entering the street so your vehicle won’t be unable to move as fast in case of an accident.
2. Keep at least one hand on the steering wheel
No matter how good of a driver you are, there is always that one time where your mind wanders. But as the saying goes, “one hand for yourself and one for the car”—keeping at least one hand on the wheel will help single-handedly steer you back to safety.
3. Be courteous to other drivers
Drive courteously to avoid car accidents. Obey all traffic laws and follow the road rules, including using turn signals for lane changes or turning into driveways. Every time you check your phone while driving, it takes your eyes off the road for five seconds, like covering a football field blindfolded during gameplay.
4. Look backward when backing out
Another cause of car accidents is when people are backing out from parking spots and failing to look behind them. If you do this, there is an increased chance that something will be in your path—and then it’s too late. One way to check before you begin reversing is by using the rear-view mirror.
5. Perform engine maintenance regularly
Scheduling an annual appointment for your car’s preventive maintenance can help you avoid costly repairs down the road. Not only will it improve gas mileage, but it may even make certain parts last longer, like spark plugs or headlights.
6. Watch for red-light runner
Red-light runners are some of the most likely to cause car accidents. They’re also often young, inexperienced drivers who may not know how dangerous their behavior is on the road. Try installing a headlight timer that will turn off your lights after stopping at a red light, so it isn’t glaring in other cars’ rearview mirrors.
7. Scan 12 seconds ahead
Drive at safe speeds. Don’t drive when tired or intoxicated. Stop driving if you have a medical emergency like heart trouble, diabetes, seizures, etc. Always wear your seatbelt and make sure the driver does too (if applicable).
8. Do not tailgate
Do not tailgate. If you drive too close to the car in front of you, it creates a dangerous situation for everyone on the road. You put yourself and others at risk and increase your chance of being involved in an accident when you follow too closely behind another vehicle.
We hope that these strategies help you in preventing road accidents. Make sure that you follow the tips for your safety.
