Shed away that snake skin and what’s left underneath is nothing but a wounded bird unable to fly
Wings clipped so long ago, the only way to survive is to create this grand facade of being so damn terrifying
This fearsome illusion, composed so well, the sound of your voice would make my heart stop with terror
But now, my dear mother, your vulnerability is left exposed to the world
Walls caving in as reality hits,
You have filled the hearts of your children with fear
The hearts you spent 9 long months forming in your very own body
You chose to put this mask on, you chose to be resentful towards my sibling and I
You thought, maybe this way they’ll grow up tough too
This way, they’ll withstand any pain life throws at them
But then you realize, you were trying so hard to protect them from harm
Only to discover you were the cause of their pain
You were the reason they believed they didn’t deserve love
And now all you can do is stay silent & cry
Because now you have opened your eyes, now you can see how much hurt you have caused the people you were supposed to love most
And how it is too late, you know as much as you try to change, they will always fear you
How I wish you would sink your teeth into me and release the toxicity you held so dearly
Because seeing you cry breaks my heart
And yes, words do hurt
But sometimes silence is the real killer

POPS is a high school club that welcomes all those whose lives have been touched by prison. We offer a space where members are encouraged to write, talk and paint their truths. At POPS we thrive on seeing the world as it is while imagining it as it could be. We are creating hope by tackling shame and fear. We are building a community based on dignity and openness.
