Sometimes it’s hard appreciating what we have. We look out at the world with a constant need to do more, be more, and prove we’re better than the next guy. While this continuous ambition for growth, exploration, and development is a necessary part of life, we need to balance our “need to achieve” with an appreciation for what we have in the present.
If you struggle with gratitude, here are five habits to help you appreciate your world today.
1. Watch your language
Do you ever hear yourself saying sentences like “I hate that” or “man, that sucks”? The way we speak and the words we use have an immense impact on our outlook on life. It’s impossible to be negative and be grateful at the same time. The more we use toxic language, the more we poison our minds and forget what’s good in our lives. The next time you’re about to say something negative, stop yourself and try to think of something that you’re thankful for at that moment.
2. Stop looking at everybody else
We often compare ourselves to the people around us and measure our accomplishments against what others have achieved. This habit of comparison is a fast-track to unhappiness. The more we compare ourselves to a standard set by others, the more we feel we lack something in our lives. Instead of looking outward, start looking inward. Know what standards are important to you and why. When you’re focused on the things that matter to you, you’ll never feel the need compare yourself to someone else’s standard.
3. Gain perspective
What do you see when you look at people who have achieved great things? Do you only look at their accomplishments? Or have you also looked at all of the challenges they’ve faced and sacrifices they’ve made to get to where they are today? If you’re looking to gain some perspective, try reading some biographies. They’re a great way to understand the story behind peoples achievements and help you change how you look at your circumstance.
4. Notice the little things
It’s easy to get caught up in daily activities. Hours, days, and weeks seem to fly by, and we wonder where all the time went. Life is fast, slow it down. Take a moment to notice the beauty of the world around you. Simple things, like the smell of a fresh cup of coffee or hearing the laughter of a small child, can make you feel grateful to be alive. Clear your mind and focus on your senses. It’ll help you appreciate what’s happening right in front of you.
5. Remember how finite life really is
This may seem morbid, but it’s important to think about your death. If you were to die tomorrow, how would you rate the quality of your life? Did you live well? Did you try your best? Would you be proud of your time on this earth? The more we acknowledge that our time is finite, the more we’ll appreciate every minute that we’re here. Don’t wait for a near-death experience to get that wake-up call. Try spending some time daily imagining the end of your life.
