As we enter 2025, many of us are on our “new year, new me” grind. While I’m not sure if I believe that we can become brand new people overnight, I do believe that there are a number of things we can all do to make sure that we have a happier — and healthier — year ahead. Here are five ways to make 2025 your happiest year yet!
1. Be Realistic With Your Goals
When creating New Year’s resolutions or new year’s goals, it’s easy to be an overachiever. It’s best to be realistic with yourself, however. Be sure to consider what you can reasonably accomplish in a year. You might even consider breaking your goals down into quarters to make it easier to achieve them.
2. Celebrate Your Victories — Big and Small
When you do accomplish your goals, it’s important to celebrate! Research has found that celebrating small wins is important and helps us feel better about ourselves.
This year, I plan to celebrate weekly, monthly, and quarterly. Celebrating your wins as they occur is a great way to stay on track — and remain motivated throughout the year that lies ahead.
3. Spend Time With Friends and Family
The longest study on happiness found that the key to a happy life is staying connected to friends, family, and community. In today’s world, it can be easy to stick to yourself. Maybe you’re too busy hustling and working to make time for family, while we get so caught up in texting our friends that we never bother to call them or make time for lunch dates.
Go visit your family members. Schedule time with your friends. Plan to spend time with your neighbors. If you’re lonely, consider joining a local group or community. Being intentional with your time in a way that allows you to be more social will help you make 2025 your best year yet!
4. Make it a Goal to Help Others
Research has found that helping other people can make us happier. There are so many ways to help other people. For some, that might mean volunteering your time at a local organization, soup kitchen or nursing home. Others might find that donating food to the local food pantry or donating blood brings them a sense of purpose. You might consider checking in on elderly or disabled neighbors and helping them run errands. No matter what the case is, being considerate and helpful to others can help you find more joy in your own life.
5. Spend More Time in Nature
Spending more time in nature can make you happier and healthier. Research has found that spending just 120 minutes in nature per week can have a positive effect on your mental health. Going for a walk at the local park is a great way to enhance your mental wellbeing.
2025 will be what you make of it. Being realistic about your goals, celebrating your victories, being social, helping others, and spending more time in nature are all great ways to experience more joy this year.
