The 72nd anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki just passed recently. The mayor of Nagasaki urged nations to abandon the idea of using nuclear weapons.
With the threat of nuclear holocaust once again rearing its ugly head, we have to begin to ask: “Has the veneer of civilization begun to crack?” It has been quite some time since I have had to entertain seriously, the idea a president would be insane enough to consider nuclear weapons as an actual option. It would appear that time has now returned.
For those of you too young to remember the Cold War, there was a period of time in American history where students would learn to climb under their desks, cover their heads and wait for the blast before retiring to a bomb shelter in the basement of their schools (or wherever we were supposed to wait while the authorities told us where to huddle up in terror while the world was ending…)
When the next power outage happens (and you don’t know why) is it because of the beginnings of a nuclear holocaust and we should get our shotguns and begin looting, or should we hunker down with a flashlight and a book and tell ghost stories while we wait for power to be restored. In one of these scenarios, the dystopia is just beginning, the other, the world is poised to return to whatever passes for normal in your neck of the woods.
On the upside, if we have an all-out nuclear war, we will at least get to enjoy the comforts of reduced temperature and the relief of nuclear winter to protect us from global warming’s rising temperatures while we starve to death. Huzzah!

What do you think of the Trump Administration’s stance on North Korea?
Does the idea of fire and fury the likes the world has never seen seem like a reasonable stance to take in this situation?
How will you know the difference? Would it take a day, two, five, before you decided it was no longer a joke and the beginning of a new way of life if you didn’t see the bombs fall?
Can this current administration be considered responsible if the President appears to be working toward creating conditions for a nuclear attack?
Would the rest of the world join in launching a nuclear response to Korea or would they condemn the United States for being involved in this irresponsible chain of events?
How do you feel about the president’s unpleasant stance in all but threatening Korea with nuclear attack? Do you consider what he’s doing a sign of strength or weakness?
