I started watching the newest season of Fuller House with my girls the other day. They love the silly humor and the fact that I watched the adult character as kids on Full House.
In one episode they mention a landline and the youngest character asked what’s a landline? I laughed and both of my girls turned, looked at me and asked yeah what is a landline?
I instantly felt one million years old, and then realized how would they know we’ve always just had our cell phones they’ve never used a landline in our home.
I asked them You know that phone at grandma and grandpa’s house?
Yeah, they said nodding their heads.
That is a landline.
Oh ok, they said and continued watching the wholesome cheesiness of Fuller House.
This isn’t the first thing from my childhood that I’ve had to explain. I’ve explained cassette tapes, VCR’s, phone books and Polaroid cameras. They were shocked to learn that we used to have to wait for film to be developed to see if our pictures turned out well.
The best was when spending a weekend at my mom’s house, they didn’t understand that you can’t pause live TV. They’ve always had cable and Netflix which you can pause at your convenience, but grandma’s house only had an antenna and a small selection of channels.
I grew up at a time when my childhood would be considered analog, and while becoming a young adult it switched to digital. My kids have only ever known digital and even that has changed so quickly.
We bought a camcorder when we had our first child. We haven’t used it in years since our phones are now so multi-functional. Growing up I didn’t have a computer until I bought my first laptop during my third year of college. Each of my children has their own tablet and have had computer classes in their school curriculum since kindergarten.
Kids do make you feel like a dinosaur sometimes but it’s amazing to see how integrated their lives are with technology. I can’t even imagine what the future will be like when they have kids of their own. Maybe they’ll be watching Fullest House (the newest spin-off of Full House) and get asked Hey what’s an iPhone?
