Gentlemen, ladies, we need to talk. It’s about your love life.
Whether you’ve been married for years or are swinging single, there’s one problem that far too many of you have in the bedroom. No, it’s nothing that can be fixed by a diet plan or a steamy book or even “male enhancement.” You see, it’s the room itself.
Yes, you’re in love, and these things shouldn’t matter: it shouldn’t matter that your mattress is sagging and old, and it shouldn’t matter that your headboard is broken and leaning over the bed, and it shouldn’t matter that your kids’ laundry is sitting in the corner waiting to be folded. But it does matter, folks, and if you want to have a fulfilling love life, you have to host it in the right setting. Let’s talk about getting your bedroom romance-ready.
Mattresses matter
If you’ve had the same mattress since you graduated college, and now your kids are in school, then you need a new mattress, people!
That’s an extreme example, of course – your mattress may give out much sooner than that, especially if you went with a cheaper option the last time you bought one. Sagging mattresses are no fun to sleep on, and they’re not much fun to do anything else on, either! Old mattresses can also have stains (hidden, hopefully, by your nice sheets) and smells (harder to hide!).
Sheets and duvets
We spend a lot of time worrying about making ourselves attractive. But what about our beds? Maybe you should take a little of that time you spend worrying about your physique and, uh, technique, and instead use it to learn about duvets and sheets and pillowcases. A pleasant look and feel goes a long way, and you’ll be glad of it whenever you use your bed (including for sleeping, of course).
Decorate!
Your bed isn’t the only thing in your room (or at least it shouldn’t be). Choose your bedroom’s decor carefully: get the right furniture, and try to make sure that it all matches. Invest in some nice wall decorations, like paintings and photographic prints. You don’t have to design the whole room with romance in mind, but you do have to design it with design principles in mind! A nice, attractive space is a big part of making your bedroom comfortable.
Tidy up
After a few years of marriage and a few kids, you’ve probably settled pretty well into your home. You probably have a nice duvet by now, matching sheets, and the rest. But you also probably have a whole lot of clutter.
You’re busy! The kids make messes! And your room is a private space, a place you can close the door to and never have to show neighbors. It’s tempting to let your bedroom become the messiest room in the house.
Don’t do that. You’re right that your room is your own private space, but that should make you care more about its condition, not less! Invest in your love life (and your personal time, and your sleep cycle, and your morning routine) by keeping your space clean and clear of clutter. You’ll be glad you did.
