Sustainability is the buzzword in every nook and corner of the world. However, the burning question is, “What is sustainability?” A lot of information has been put out and explained about this concept, but not everyone is on par when it comes to practicing it.
When you adopt sustainable practices, you’re embracing a sustainable lifestyle, also referred to as “Earth harmony living.” By consciously opting for eco-friendly alternatives, you’re demonstrating mindfulness and a commitment to protecting the environment. Unfortunately, many of us have unwittingly followed a reckless lifestyle for years, through actions such as excessive plastic use or wasteful consumption of resources.
Start small
Big changes start with small actions. Start by taking a closer look at your consumption habits. Ask yourself questions such as, “What materials are my everyday items made of?” For example, consider swapping plastic products with materials like bamboo. Another area to focus on is the ingredients in your grooming and cleaning products. Swap out chemical-heavy cleaners with homemade, eco-friendly options like vinegar and water. These small changes can add up and make a significant impact on reducing your carbon footprint.
Shop smart
Plan meals, use shopping lists and avoid impulse buys. *ugh, note to self* Bring your own bag when you shop, start carrying your own reusable totes.
Practicing declutter
One of the core principles of sustainable decluttering is generate as little waste as possible. If it still feels like a mind-boggling task, consider by sorting the following:
- Items you are keeping
- Items to be repaired
- Items that can be reused and passed on to friends, family, charity shops, or sold online or at a car boot sale.
- Items that can be recycled, which can then be gathered and taken to your household recycling center.
The greatest threat to our planet is the believe that someone else will save it. — Robert Swan
Another significant trends to keep an eye on:
- ESG investing: a type of investment that considers not only financial returns, but also environmental, social, and governance factors.
- Climate positivity: going beyond net-zero carbon emissions to actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere.
- Affordable renewable energy: thanks to falling costs, renewable energy is becoming more accessible and widely adopted.
- Clean transportation: many major car manufacturers have committed to transitioning to electric vehicles.
- Sustainable consumer products: eco-conscious consumers are driving demand for products that align with their values.
- Business transparency: governments are pushing for more disclosure from companies regarding their climate risks.
- Decarbonization of food: there’s a growing movement towards alternative proteins, dairy, and other food products that are more sustainable than current industrial practices.
Altogether, these trends will be an important step towards creating a more equitable world that meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations.
