When I did my first cartoon for the Good Men Project I was startled at the amount of comments that accused me of “anti-fat bigotry.” It got me thinking, and I found myself looking back at all the comics I had done this year that might be considered anti-fat. Strangely enough, only my comic criticizing the way men treat women received such comments. I wonder why.
Even stranger is how men are totally fine with depictions of women no matter how pornographic, unrealistic, or cruelly as possible. But a chubby guy in sweatpants? That’s going too far.
See Justin’s other comics here.
As far as I know, I was the first or second reader to criticize the anti-fat imagery in your cartoon here on GMP. I’ve also criticized sexism against women in comics many times, such as here and here and here and here and here, to name a few. And in my own comics, I make a point of showing a wide variety of positive female characters, none of whom are drawn as pin-ups in ridiculous costumes. To me, your response comic seems like a refusal to engage with good-faith criticism in a good-faith manner. Even if you were right and… Read more »
Agreed Barry.
Justin showed us a limited sample of his work here at GMP (as I broke down in my comment above) and then was bothered by the criticism that came along with it. Its almost like he thinks the existence of unconstructive criticism grants him a free pass on having his work criticized at all.
O_o;
You two are ridiculous. He’s obviously a weekly cartoonist, so the fact that you site “…the only work I’ve seen of yours are the four comics” just means he’d only been working for four weeks!
Tere are a LOT more sample of his work:

That aside, I don’t think he was bothered at all by the comments he got. I think he was inspired by them. I think YOU are the ones who are bothered for being called out.
You two are ridiculous. He’s obviously a weekly cartoonist, so the fact that you site “…the only work I’ve seen of yours are the four comics” just means he’d only been working for four weeks! No it actually means that for people who frequent Good Men Project but not his comic site have only seen four of his comics have been seen here. If I only choose to show you a subset of my work I don’t get to then turn around and be bothered that you didn’t go back through my entire library of work. So no not ridiculous… Read more »
He’s not choosing to show you a subset. He is literally doing one post every week.
You’re like all the people slandered Obama when he didn’t fix the economy four weeks into his first term.
Honestly the only work I’ve seen of yours are the four comics (with this one here before the fourth) you’ve done here at GMP. 1. The one you’re talking about being the only one to get complaints. 2. A comic showing that masculinity can be contradictive at times. 3. A comic pointing out how ready net access has given young boys to pick up on aggressive behaviors while gaming (which BTW is perpetrated against nearly all gamers, not just women). Personally I think its this. Normally we’d grow out of those behaviors but with the proliferation of the internet such… Read more »
Well, this isn’t passive aggressive at all. Face it, you got called out on bullshit. Deal with it. Also, could it be the “only comic” because it was the only one posted here (that I’m aware of, anyway.) perhaps? Since we’re talking about being consistent and all, where’s your comic about women who complain about “pornographic, unrealistic, or [cruel]” depictions of women, but see no problem with using terms like “neckbeard, basement dwelling, virgin dudebro”? And, as long as this is a pointless article anyway- Hey GMP editors, when those Nigerian girls went missing there were several articles about it… Read more »
I don’t think it’s passive-aggressive. It’s confrontational. He’s responding to his audience using his medium. Your displeasure seems to only serve as his inspiration, it seems. The way he’s dealing with it might not align with how you want him to do things, but we can’t all do what everyone -wants- us to do. And I don’t know why you post things that you’re not aware of. That only makes you look There are links to both his website and the other comics he’s posted on GMP. Also, to be fair, this is the GMP. So if you’re looking for… Read more »
This is a site for the issues of men and boys, or so I’m told. If not here, then where exactly would be an appropriate place to discuss the fact that over a hundred boys have been kidnapped?
8ball, Cameron Conaway wrote about the Nigerian boys who were massacred by the Nigerian group before pretty much anybody else.
Justin Hubbell’s opinions and thoughts are just as valid as any other man.
And … no. This is NOT passive aggressive. This is plain old confrontational. He’s literally directly calling out the people he’s criticizing. That isn’t passive.
Also, the fact that we posted this and not the ISIS story probably has more to do with how busy Cameron is right now. We post 30 posts every single day. We don’t have to choose between them.
No but what you do is CHOOSE to post male bashing posts. You CHOOSE to post articles of women demanding entitlement. You CHOOSE to post artiles full of misinformatoin, stereotypes and lies.
Women shouldn’t demand the same entitlements as men?
