The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is still, three years later, kicking ass and taking names, and due to the Human predisposition for a short attention span, has begun spreading at an unprecedented rate. While we have grown tired of the coronavirus, the latest variant, Omicron is still going strong, one of the most infectious diseases in recent medical history.
With multiple dangerous iterations of the virus, the Delta and the Omicron variant, we are struggling to determine the best way to medically treat patients with differing versions of the virus having behaving in unexpected ways to the vaccines already available to the public.
Delta proved it could still be affected by the vaccines, offering a respectable degree of resistance IF a person was vaccinated. Omicron, however, has proven it can breakthrough what was thought to be sufficient vaccinations for Delta, requiring the CDC to recommend boosters where it was possible to get them.
The Delta variant which was first discovered in India in late 2020, swept through India and Great Britain before reaching the United States, where it surged, accounting for more than 99% of all COVID cases until mid December. The CDC labeled Delta “a variant of concern,” and in according with WHO guidelines began using Greek letters to designate the virus rather than their previous numerical nomenclatures.
Delta is thought to be twice as infections as any previous variant and it affected the respiratory systems of those it infected putting them into hospitals. Delta most strongly affected the unvaccinated and was known to lead to severe outcomes, leading to increased hospitalization in some states.
Despite the rise of Omicron which is considered less likely to cause severe outcomes in hospitalization for those afflicted, the increased number of infected people have still managed to undermine medical services, cripple transportation and shipping services worldwide and with businesses insisting on returning to work, challenging the previous belief the virus had all but run its course.
While Omicron may be thought of as less lethal, the unvaccinated may experience the same unfortunate outcomes as Delta. The Omicron variant has been declared highly infectious even in comparison to Delta, spreading at an unprecedented rate across the entire planet in what appeared to be less than three months. Part of that rapid spread is the virus itself and part of it is the failure of society to mitigate the spread through mandated shutdowns.
As a result, both Delta and Omicron have spread around the world at a breakneck pace and with the revelation that Omicron can and does cause breakthrough infections, it was recommended everyone who could get a booster in the United States should get one to bolster their immune response to Omicron.
